My sister and I went to Dicks today to look for hiking and camping stuff. It seems more geared for clothing. I would have rather went to Bass Pro or Cabela's . We both did wind up getting hiking poles at wally world. They are pretty cool with compass on both ends of the handles and markers to show how deep snow is and adjustable, lots of cool features. Oh the ammo sure looked low stock at Dicks. We got to yackin about bugging out, if we have to how will we handle our 82 yr old Mom. Oh she probably could do circles around us but makin those steap hills and thick deep woods might be a challenge. Sis thought of haulin Mom in a little wagon. I don't think that will work, try haulin rocks in a soft swampy woodland I told her. So I thought of a seat with rods that two people will need to put on their shoulders ,Kinda like Roman days. I have one of those potty chairs , just need some strong light weight rods and off we go. Mom can peel taters while ridin in style. Everyone will have a job. Heres the thing, for those of you with love ones that need extra help in the bugging out, and this would be if you couldn't use autos to get anywhere but had to bug out on foot. Staying where your at was no option. Have you got a plan that will make it easier? |

Depending on the nature of the handicap or level of mobility, you might consider a two-seater motorcycle, ATV, snowmachine or even bicycle. Making a travois out of a stretcher or cot might be an option. Adding wheels to the bottom would make travel easier. In the same vein, a type of improvised rickshaw might work out too. If you are talking about really rough terrain, it is going to be a challenge no matter what. I don't know of any way of bringing someone along on a threatening trail if they are not self-mobile, without doing some form of papoose-carry (like piggy-back, but with a cloth sling to hold their weight and distribute it more evenly). It's slow, and taxing on the carrier, and not very dignified, but it will do the job.

This is a big challenge. If someone in their 80's (like my folks), or older, is not self-mobile, they also tend to be fragile. Their bone structure doesn't have its earlier strength, their skin is thinned with little or no elasticity, and all the sequential sections of their alimentary canal ain't functionin' like they used to. A rough, cross-country, alternative-transportation trip could easily result in bruises, cuts, cracked bones, diarrhea, etc. On top of this, they are likely to be on prescription meds, have low metaboilism, high blood pressure, heart disease, and more. Sometimes, it's a major challenge just gettin' Granny into and out of the car for a simple trip across town to go to church. I think this could end up becoming one of those catch-22, moral dilemmas.
