Default Love the thrift shops

Thrift shops, yardsales, flea markets..... Love them.

We find excellent wool clothing this way. We also buy garments and clothing made of worthy materials to be made into packs, emergency blankets, gun scabbars or other gear.

Very often find excellent chef's knives or industrial knives which can be easily customized into great hunting/farming/or survival knives. 4 or 6 bucks each and it will do everything a knife needs to do, except of course penetrate the hood of a car like the QVC knives- but I don't need my knife to do that.

Don't forget to look for Merino wool.

It is the wool that does not itch. I makes the best undergarments and
very expensive to buy new. I have a bunch of merino wool sweaters.
I also have the light weight underware for hiking, had to buy that
new though, like at least a 100 bucks for a set, so when you get a heavy
Merino wool sweater for five bucks that is a steal. Most people don't know
so they don't even look at them much.

You can find fairly nice water proof hiking jackets and Adirondacks, depending
on the location of the store.

These are some of my most recent purchases from flea markets. I mentioned earlier on another thread the double galvanized washing tubs on frame as was used along side wringer washing machines, excellent condition for $25.00.

Kerosene lamps and fuel for a few dollars. Many unused candles and barely used candles for 25 or 50 cents.

Very large and twin size mosquito bars for beds for $3.00 and $5.00.

The list goes on and on. There are deals to be made at these places. Once a week I go to the same flea markets and thrift stores and maybe stop at a garage sale or two along the way.

Went to my thrift store and came out with a GI sleep system, the three piece set with the light bag, heavy bag and goretex bivy bag.....$18 bucks barely used. You never know what you might find. First week of the month at ours is 50% off everything. Thrift stores are awsome.

I grew up on "rummage sale" clothes. It was quit embarrasing as a kid to explain why there was sometimes a kids name on the tag that wasn't my name.

Unfortunately the thrift shops are now suddenly trendy, so good deals are getting harder to find. Garage (yard) sales are still a reasonable source of non-clothing items here.
BTW our thrift shops are now hiring consultants to tell them what to charge for items and you can easily be paying 75% of original price and in one case 150% of what the original retail store is selling at for a particular item. Whats the point in shopping at these places if they do that?

That reminds me that some places now have online sales too. Kind of like eBay.
