FerroCerium+Mischmetal(RE) - Applications - Tantalum + Niobium + FerroCerium Mischmetal originated from Shanghai Jiangxi Metals

Here is a good link that may help. Oh and I spelled it wrong it is "Ferrocerium".

According to the site it will melt at 2000 deg. and could then be poured and cast.....

this thought came to mind as I rifled through my lumbar pack to decide what to bring on vacation. adding the gps and the headlamp to the bag forced me to ditch my altoids striker/flint char cloth kit. I can certainly do without since I've got armageddon firesteel, just like to keep it part of typical EDC because I just enjoy starting fire this "old fashioned" way so much. So taking it out got me thinking if only I could have a striker somehow part of my clothing I'd always have it w/ no space taken up. The belt buckle on my paracord belt, if the correct material, would be perfect configuration to grab and use! If anyone actually does this (omega?) I'd like to buy one.

As I said, that part would be easy. You should be carrying a piece of flint though to assure you have some way to make fire, not counting on the fact that you might be able to find something where you end up crashing, etc.
no it is not wrought iron (which is NOT hardenable and will NOT work as a striker for flint and steel sorry to call you out). the flint and steel are made in quantity with 10 series spring/ tool steel (it has nothing but .3 to .4% maganese and carbon. i use 1095 which has about .95% carbon) it would be just as hard as a regular belt buckle, but heat treat will be tricky, as all of the bends will create stress and possible cracks. for the buckle i would use maybe 1095 on for the thing that sticks into the belt i would use 1018 so it wont snap, just bend. it would be fairly fun and easy, actually, but only if you can make a buckle.

I wander if it could be detachable part of the buckle, then it can have proper shape.

I'm still hoping someone comes up with one; I still love the idea for EDC paracord belt w/ strike-able buckle!!

you can always make a loop to go around the belt for decoration. like this Flint and Steel Strikers
go down to the 1750s reproduction and make the ends closer. it will look 'cool' and will get onto an airplane but will still start a fire.

good point, even a custom sized "economy" striker to filt belt width; it could be used to tuck the end of the belt into.

Willy, I don't really understand what the composition of a good striker is (material wise). but I could certainly make a sketch of what I'm thinking based on what tenderfoot just wrote.
