I am not sure if I will ever get around to it, but I think I would need a thin refrigerator bar type magnetic strip and have another one I guess flipped so it will stick or a small thin piece of metal sewn on the other side.

Default Rare Earth magnets

I use them for a lot of tasks. They come in various sizes. The most useful are the 1/4" dia balls. I also like the ones they sell for cabinet closure. I keep twenty of these in my BOB. They are about 2/3 the size of a pencil eraser. The uses are endless. As buttons, temporarily connecting two pieces of plastic or cloth, etc. Also, a couple of them will attach to any of your small metal gear like loose fish hooks, safety pins, needles pins, small knives and etc. They all sit there clumped together on the magnet instead of hiding in the seams of you bag.

One of the balls stuck in your pocket is a great way to collect screws and nuts when you are working on a project. Nothing iron evades their attention. Screws and small parts aren't lost.

I have secret uses too involving a product called a Starr. Patent pending

old fridges or here they use it to stick learner driver plates onto cars, you can buy it by the strip or the sheet.

buttons are still the quietest and easiest to use. I'd use two strips one in the pocket and one in the flap

why not try button snaps? I own a lot of casual button downs shirts that use them. They are rather quiet, much much more quiet than velcro plus you wont get any magnetic interference with anything. Personally I love them. And its a plus in moments of passion

How about snaps? I have a couple of western shirts that have snaps on the pockets and they don't make noise when opening/closing.

I like the idea of other type of fasteners, but cannot go past the ordinary buttons.

I'd look at other means of fasteners before I would use magnets. Just from them being able to cause your equipment to malfunction and really screw up your compass would be enough of a deterrent for me.
