I picked up Des Pawson's excellent Handbook of Knots a while ago and was reading it when I saw how to make the five-strand braid (also known as a "sennit") and thought it'd make a good hatband. I took two strands of khaki, two strands of olive drab and one strand of black cord and I must say it came out real nice. As a bonus, using those colors together gives it a classic camo look so it's a nice addition to my survivalin' hat. Here's a good article on how to make a five-strand braid: Five-strand braiding

jack thats a nice looking sinnet - would also make a great 550 paracord belt. go online, but a simple belt buckle, give it a go and post your results!!

I actually thought about doing that. Then I remembered that I owned a braided leather belt about eight years ago and that thing stretched big-time, it seemed the more I wore it the longer it got so I can just imagine how much a para cord belt would stretch.

Now THAT is a good idea. I'm not so much of a hat wearer but the belt is even more practical. Thanks for that link.

doesn't stretch at all (mil spec paracord does not stretch out or shrink) appreciably.

stretching is negligable its more a tightening of the weave/knots. belts look good but arent so hot if you have knife sheaths/pouches to hang on them.

My experience is ok with knife, but not heavy stuff like gun, pouches etc

I found it was like having a rope around my waist and also didnt like multitool, firesteel, torch and camera pouches causing strain and damage

I too have a para cord hat band not 5 strand as I recall it is 3 strand. Looks great and an easy way to bring a lot of extra cord. I am not looking forward to the day I have to undo this braid to use it. I know it will take a long time, but better to take a long time then not to have any and need it.
