Default Looking to get some new boots - Recommendations?

Hey gus, Christmas is coming up and I'm looking at having some new boots on my Christmas list. I want something that's got a little bit of everything, or well that will work in a majority of environments. Winter here coldest I've had it is negative 10 - negative 20. Currently I wear a pair of these: Wolverine Boots and Shoes - Wolverine MultiShox 6 inch Steel Toe Boot I've worn them in all conditions, rain, mud, snow, ice. I've always had good results with them but I just want something different I guess. Any recommendations would be great. Even if they don't neccesarily match up to what I am looking for anything is good.

Thanks bunches!

Honestly, as far as bang for your buck, the Wolverine steel toed work boots are a pretty good deal, and as you stated, they can be worn in most situations. If you're looking for something a bit warmer, check your local Army/Navy Surplus stores for(I don't know their real name) "Mickey Mouse" boots. They should know what you're talking about from that alone, but if not, they are, from what I've been told, what is used by paratroopers. But really, any military surplus boots used in cold climates should be better than most similar items you'd find at normal stores. And being surplus items, and usually used, they shouldn't cost you much, if any, more than a pair of Wolverine boots would.

Thanks for the input guys. I found these boots and wondered if anyone has had any experience with them? I know 5.11 is supposed to be a good brand so I figure they would be a good value:5.11 TACTICAL 12113 SLEET 8" BOOTS - MENS 6 REG - BNIB - eBay (item 190347028419 end time Dec-04-09 17:54:52 PST)

Considering the fact you state that you don't have any problems with those Wolverine boots, I would imagine you don't go camping much for long periods in the snow? I know I don't, but if you can afford it, maybe get one pair of boots for average use, with a modicum of light insulation (which is better than none like most boots), and another with a significant amount of insulation for future snow/ice camping? Just a thought...

Where I live (Florida) it doesn't snow, much less get cold enough to to need a crap load of insulation which is why I don't go higher than 200 grams of Thinsulate insulation... but for you, I would recommend probably a boot with no more than 200 grams for average use, in between from going from heated building, to heated car back to heated house during the winter, and/or perhaps something in addition to that, if you have the money... a boot with a crap load of insulation, like CW (Celticwarrior's boot), the Sentry, or... the boot I plan to buy one of these days in case I ever do move further North in the future. It is the Rocky Blizzard Stalker.

These would be good for trudging along in moderate height snow (under normal conditions) for a few days probably. I don't have much experience in snow as most people on this forum who could probably give you better advice. I've lived in snow climates for half my life, but never went camping in the dang stuff!!! Whoever does that is just BONKERS!

Wolverine boots, in my experiencs anyways, tend to have ample room inside of them to wear thicker socks than you'd normally wear. I could easily throw a pair of insulated socks over my regular ones and still get my foot into my Wolverine boots, as they are very "roomy" inside, though I do buy them with that intent due to where I live. And since they(at least the ones I buy are) are made from water resistant material, your feet will stay dry, so the insulated socks are the only thing you'd really need to make them winter ready.

Obviously I'm not insinuating that Wolverine boots are the best boots around for winter usage, just that they are certainly workable for winter usage, and are a good all around boot to have at your disposal, especially for the amount they cost.

Oh HECK YEAH! Hey, did you just get them recently after my last PM? I think so many people underestimate the value of a really good pair of boots, fosho! I just got a new pair of the S2V in mossy oak GORE-TEX, and they are probably going to be the best boots I've ever owned personally. I didn't even have to break them in, as there is totally no hot spots after wearing them all day yesterday. A GOOD investment, and wasn't that expensive for the return in quality/comfort and waterproof/insulation capability!
