Good work on the Balaclava Kevin. If you have any trouble with your knitting and crochet go ask the ladies at the wool shop (take your work with you). I learnt most of these skills from library books and then taking my problems to the local shop for advice.....I would also get great feedback on finished products so the next item was even better. One big tip for your knitting....dont pull the loop tight at the beginning of each row it will produce a lop sided result esp on squared off items. I did notice a slight pull on your knitted square. Also when keep your sample squares....they'll make a great blanket.

I actually enjoy sewing to be honest. It's very relaxing and nice to be able to sew my own buttons, tears, patches, zippers, etc without help. (Shrug) I think it takes more of a man to do it then to avoid it just because of the ignorant/arrogant beliefs of society. Might as well enjoy it while your at it. ![]() BTW I have a wonderfull seamstress friend whose name is pat which if I need a professional job done she is wonderful and fixes my mistakes. |

Hello everyone. I just came across your forum while doing a search on crocheted survival kit pouches - I was bored . What led me to it, is I make crocheted pouches out of jute for mini PSK's.This is a picture of them along with a couple of Buck Alpha Dorados for size perspective. ![]() The idea of crocheting them is that if necessary, with a couple of snips, the pouches can immediately be unraveled into about 120 feet of jute for making snares, cords for bow drills, tying shelters together, hafting arrowheads, etc. and of course for a first class tinder. This is a view of the kit: ![]() I normally wouldn't have jumped in here, but I didn't think you would get a lot of hits on survival oriented guys doing crochet stuff. The reason I first got involved is I make slings. A buddy of mine, who also makes slings, suggested we could incorporate a pattern into the pouch to give it a bit of sex-appeal . Because the pocket is netted, a spider would be appropriate. Anyway, we thought the way to do this was to learn how to crochet....., so I learned. Haven't figured out the spider thing, yet, though.![]() One of my slings: ![]() My home forum is the Wilderness Skills & Survival sub-forum at BladeForums.com I recently posted a thread in which the pouch was unraveled to demonstrate the amount of usable cordage and also making an L-7 snare and used the jute for tinder. If you're interested, you can see it here. Anyway, it looks like you have an interesting forum here. I will be back to check it out further. Cheers, Doc ETA, am I am embarassed - I didn't notice there was 6 pages. I don't knit, but it's on my list. Kevin - first class job on the balaclava!

I am very impressed with the guys on here! Even if society thinks knitting and sewing are "women's work" skills, it still may take us women some searching to learn them! True, I learned to sew from my mom (she made my sis and I halloween costumes each year) but I didn't learn knitting from family. I picked it up in high school backstage during a play I was in. Kinda like riding a bike... I stopped for a while then started then stopped etc. Still, all I can do is basic rectangle or square stuff... So well done Kevin!!! Personally, I think sewing would be a great skill for any survivalist. If the world stops working for whatever reason, you could pull down your curtains and make clothes or blankets or whatever... It's a skill that could help you make fur coats from whatever you catch in snares (supposing you know how to work it into a usable fabric ). Haven't done any crocheting, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to add it to my bank of knowledge lol

first one uses single strand 25' of paracord: ![]() ![]() since slings wear at the release knot; i prefer to use a few beads for finger grip. gives great purchase when really letting rip. also, the rock projectile wears the string on the release side, near the pouch. to protect this area and extend the sling's life, I'm gonna whipp about 6" of the cord in that area w/ hemp (not shown in pic); I've also got to trip the ends and it will be done.
