I almost want to think the US government is deliberately putting off using our own oil to save it for later, better to import now while oil is cheap from somewhere else and save our oil for later. Whether or not we move on to other sources of fuel there is likely to maintain a heavy demand for oil, if you look in to manufacturing oil is used in nearly everything as plastics. There has never been a stated policy to this effect, and I'm not sure our government is that smart, but it would be a smart move I guess.
