Default Gold Mine can legally destroy lake

Quote:
The court narrowly decided that Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp. may dump rock debris from the company's gold mine into a lake on federal land.

In a 5-4 vote, the court overturned an appeals court ruling that had invalidated the company's permit. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had granted the permit in 2005, which allowed the company to deposit 4.5 million tons of rock waste into the lake over a decade. The waste is being generated from the Kensington Gold Mine, an underground operation northwest of Juneau, Alaska.

What I can't find, but I *know* I heard yesterday was that the damage done to this lake would KILL everything in the lake, and our government is allowing this! The did defend that it wouldn't be a permanent devastation, but still, come on.

Gold, or any resource of value for that matter, WILL be first and foremost for the Government. Take a good look around you and the economic hell that's chugging towards us all. Gold is god in the land of government. All governments, no matter what they tell you.

The fact that any devastation can be allowed by our government, whether permanent or short term is horrible to hear. Devastation is devastation.

Therein lay the problem, often much more value is destroyed than is taken by those who make the fast profit and leave.

its not the gold or the rock thats the problem though its all the other minerals like arsenic which are often in the same veins. they should be made to stick a giant tarp down then put it back afterwards.

Ok... why are they trucking this waste all the way to Idaho from Alaska??

And why do they need a lake to dump it into?? Why not a big pit instead? They better have a no-limit-free-fishing-weekend for that lake!

Dang, what a hyperbolic double standard. They destroy nature to dig for gold, but they won't "destroy" a section of tundra to dig for black gold so we as a nation can be independent once and for all for quite a couple generations to come... interesting...
