Yeah, the fact that SOME temps in SOME places are generally higher than previous years, or that it is "more stormy" than normal, or other anecdotal evidence, is hardly the type of hard science that the GW crowd wants us to buy into. The thing that I always say is that we measure things in fractions of a degree today. 20 years ago, thermometers were just going digital and were accurate down to the degree, but not fractions. 20 years before that, they were using mercury and other analog thermometers, which were not even accurate to the degree, and 100 years before that, no one really cared if an outdoor thermometer was accurate within 5 degrees. It wasn't that critical, and since most "weather stations" were only at lighthouses, naval stations and colleges, they were hardly generic indicators of overall temperatures nation or worldwide. To use any of that as "accurate data" to base an entire hypothesis on is odd in itself, but when the "corroborating evidence" is based on pollen samples from ice cores, you have to wonder if they have considered that there might be a lot of other explanations. Add to that, that the world is still emerging from the last Ice Age, and we have not hit our peak temps before the next one starts up, and the data about Sunspot and solar flare activities on weather, I think that the GW adherents have jumped to way too many conclusions far too soon.

I don't really know if global warming is real or not. A good deal of people think Al Gore invented it along with the internet. I personaly think our dependence on fossil fuels will kill us all far faster than global warming. By addressing global warming they would be also addressing fossil fuels which are finite and running out.

I think the issue is that we know its happening but have no precedent to deal with it. the difference between what we are doing compared to nature is we are polluting and destroying the natural controlling elements by our actions. when it was just science then it was straight but the issue now is the way lobbyists have gotten hold of it and once its your job you will do anything to keep the funding. to some extent I'd rather we were being lied to which wouldnt be anything new after all as long as we started to sort it out and live within our means thinking longer term. in the 50's they made toasters and cars that lasted 50 years nowadays 5 years is too long and considered bad business. how did we allow that to happen? |

Even without a thermometer, one can clearly see the ice caps around both poles of the earth melting at an alarming rate. These are not small areas of the planet, to be sure. They constitute huge areas. Something is up. My feeling is it's not going to end in a good way. Don't be buying property in coastal cities as long term investments. |

I am a tree hugging enviromeddalist monkeywrenching survivalist. Al Gore is a politician and he stole the issue for his own gain. The man is a majority holder in occidental petroleum as I pointed out in another thread. So please, just put aside false battles over catchy phrases like global warming, climate change or equally B.S. catchwords like Wise use on the other side. The earth is in BAD shape. All of you have gone hiking and walked into a trashed bit of wilderness; garbage tossed everywhere, campfires that scorched the minerals from the soil that will never grow plants for decades, chopped up GREEN trees for firewood and Oh yes, shot up beer bottles, paper targets of bin Laden and discarded brass everywhere by gun slobs. Now just multiply that by the daily impact of people worldwide as individual and nation. The news is talking abut a newly discovered garbage mass floating in the ocean; plastic, human sewage, medical waste, fishing nets and God knows what else.IT IS THE SIZE OF TEXAS. This is what we are replacing the polar ice shelves with, man caused or natural cycle. Instead of dismissing the environmental movement as a bunch of wackos who want to take 'rights' away, the outdoor community at large should have been on those lumber road blockades, anti whaling ships and other protests arm in arm with the 'hippies' dressed in our carharts, filsons and digital cammies years ago. |
