Default FireSteel

The FireSteel I received worked the very first time and it is a great tool to have. Thanks to Ron for the expert advice on how to use it correctly!

I just ordered the 5 pack upgrade and I am looking forward to receiving them. I have seen first hand that there IS a difference in firesteels! It probably has to do with the quality of Ferrocerium, and is not because of the striker. I have seen the same firesteel used with different strikers with no difference in spark quality or quantity. The same strikers were used on a different firesteel and there WAS a difference in spark quality and quantity. So I think that is what the difference is. I won't say for sure but when Crashdive and I met up in the middle of August. I believe the best firesteel that provided the best sparks were Ron's which is why I ordered from him. The one I have now is adequate but it never hurts to upgrade when possible, and let's face it 5 different firesteels can be put in 5 different locations each according to it's size.

My youngest son has no problem with the fire steel i ordered. I told him if TSHTF he was in charge of the fire. I think he could burn a puddle of water now if he did not point out the fact ( hey dad we may need to drink that).

Default My favorite striker

I've tried several and by far the striker that I like best is a tungsten carbide paint scraper blade. Lowes carries them and also amazon.com. As with all strikers the side of the blade you use and the angle of the blade matter so experiment till you get it right. I smooth the corners to make them safer to carry. They are kind of expensive though.

Default firesteel ranger

Hi Folks,
I am a newbie here, just joined with this forum recently.
I am from Indonesia, i work in the conservation and used to be work much in the field.
Just couple minutes ago received a package from Ron, contains scraper and firesteel ranger.
Thanks Ron, at first i though that you were not aware to my purchase, since it takes few days before you update my purchase. But, the shipping is so cheap and fast compared to any other vendor. Excellent.
My question here is about how many fire we can made from ranger? It said hundreds, but hundreds is start from 101 to 999 LOL

It will all depend on how many "scrapes" of the firesteel it takes you to get a fire going. Hundreds is a conservative estimate in my opinion.

If tungsten carbide strikes sparks well on Firesteel, would it make sense to use worn out TC tipped drill bits?
