As you have seen in my recent firesteels in the rain post, my EDC ranger just bit the dust. I usually us a longer 2 part turks head (see "knife buddy") which uses about roughly 4' of 550 paracord. Para-steels - Picture update I figured I'd try a different kind of paracord handle, like I have done for my armageddon (which after last two days fire practice has become my hands down favorite!!) Say hello to my little friend... I figured I'd try a version of the two-strand diamond knot, followed through by the working ends to form a turks head w/ a loop. I first hacksaw a barb near the end of the ranger for anchoring purposes. this method uses roughly 2.5' of paracord and leaves more ranger exposed for striking. Good thing about those is you can use the paracord for a bowdrill string when the firesteel is used up. I use paracord on my bowdrills, and it works great. Of course, it eventually wears out as well. The inner strands suck for a bowdrill cord, they stretch tight and snap. I think that only the OD and black paracord have the anti abrasive coating on the sheath, which is what you want for bowdrill cordage.
