Default Charcloth Rounds

I mentioned this in Kevin's recent thread, "seeking innovative way to carry charcloth;" and, thought I would throw out a few pix to share.

This is charcloth made from 100% Cotton Makeup Rounds -- the fluffy/porous pads that ladies use to remove their makeup. They char nicely, and they have lots of internal surface area making for a nice ember once a spark is caught from your flint-and-steel set.

Pics, below:

Yup! Same procedure as using swatches of cotton Tee-Shirt or cotton towels. Just don't layer them too thick in your pyrolysis tin.

thanks for followup. they look much more durable than even the ones I make out of blue jeans. how much does the pack cost? save time cutting too. only thing I like about the old cloths is its sort of recycling (one-time recycling anyway)

I make rolls like danish pastries out of my char cloth and keep it in a shoe polish tin, not sure how far these shrink down.

Name brand stuff = about $1.80. Generic stuff = about $1.25. Quantity/pack ranges between 50 and 100. Get 'em on sale!

Yup...saves time cutting, and the size is uniform. Recycling old jeans, wash cloths, etc., is good too, though! I just really like the way these guys take a spark.

What do you use for a makeshift pyrolysis tin and how long do you burn these before extinguising to make the charcloth?
