According to the company the second generation of fire piston
is better than the older ones. As it can be made tighter than many
of them and you can still close it up due to it's air relief valve.

The higher pressure means more easy to light off tinder. Also
to be able to light off natural tinder that other fire pistons may
not light off.

This can be important if you live in a wet area or in the mountains.
The higher you go, the lower the air density so the better you need
the design to be.

So I plan to go with this when I can as I live in a very wet
and mountainous area.

I would think bamboo would work but may wear out in time, of course its not something youll use daily. Supposedly the idea was discovered by accident from the use of blowguns.

I was thinking more along the lines of < 20 bucks. The principal is simple enough, sealed chamber to compress air with.
However; my wife has informed me that they are built from bamboo in the PI at no cost other than time. Thats an even cheaper price. She's going to ask her family to send some examples when she calls them next.
CWI, let us know what happens with that, if you could start importing them, I'd sure be interested in buying one from ya

Default Science kit -- Fire Syringe

HEY!!! I came into school today to do a little paperwork, and look at what I found sitting on the secretary's desk!!! It's a demo kit for demontrating the gas laws (Boyle's Law, etc.). It's sold my Hubbard Scientific and they call it a "fire syringe;" BUT, it's exactly what we would call a fire piston!

It's precisely machined, with three O-rings for an excellent seal. They claim that if you put a piece of dry cotton in the bottom of the tube, it will burst into flame!

What's really cool is that it's transparent, and it comes in at only about $34.00.

I thought y'all might get a kick out of this: Opentip.com: Fire Syringe Kit

Here's a demo video and explanation of the operation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnpvQvCTj90

If you do a web search for "fire syringe" you get additional links to those you get when you search for "fire piston."

I don't know who this one belongs to, but if it's up for grabs, I'm grabbin' it!

I never looked at this thread because just the name of it "Fire Piston" sounded out of my range.......but......now after watching some of these videos I think I'd like to play. LOL That maglite one looks pretty easy to make and I just might give it a shot. I have wood douls (sp) and can find a little rubber tip somewhere I'm sure so I'll have a go at this I think.
very cool guys!

Getting flame inside piston is OK, problem is to get it out before flame is out and lit other tinder.

So best to have something that will keep ember as I have my doubts, if enough combustible material can be put inside and taken out in time before flame is out.
