Ukraine closes all schools to fight swine flu - Yahoo! News

KIEV, Ukraine – Urging its citizens not to panic, Ukraine on Monday closed the nation's schools for a week to avoid the spread of swine flu and suggested that nightclubs, cinemas and food markets in the west also shut down.

The World Health Organization said Monday there was no evidence that Ukraine had a bad outbreak of swine flu but at the government's request it had sent a health team there to help the country cope.

"But this is not an indication that the situation is severe," said WHO spokeswoman Liuba Negru. "The information we have gotten (from the government), we have to double-check it and make sure it is real, evidence-based information."

Ukraine's Health Ministry said Monday that 70 people in the nation of 40 million have died of flu, but did not say how many of those deaths were related to swine flu. Worldwide, outbreaks of regular seasonal flu claim 50,000 lives each year.

Nevertheless, all schools have been closed for a week across Ukraine, even in the capital, Kiev, where there have been no confirmed cases of swine flu.

In western Ukraine, local authorities advised people to travel only when necessary, a Health Ministry spokeswoman said.

All outdoor markets have been closed in the western region of Lviv, where the governor also urged cinemas, cafes, nightclubs and theaters to shut down until further notice.

Some observers, including the speaker of the parliament, Vladimir Litvin, suggested that these measures are the result of political wrangling ahead of the country's presidential election in January. The pivotal vote could overturn the 2004 Orange Revolution that swept a pro-Western government to power.

"We are seeing a political competition to see who will be the first to lead this process (of fighting swine flu)," Litvin said, according to the UNIAN news agency.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko met a Swiss shipment of anti-viral drugs at the Kiev airport on Monday.

"The government has declared the situation an epidemic, but there is absolutely no need to panic," she declared on national television.

Her main rival, President Viktor Yushchenko, said thousands of people were infected and called for assistance from NATO, the European Commission, the United States, Russia and other countries.

Konstantin Bondarenko, director of the Gorshenin Institute, a political consultancy, said that Tymoshenko has the most to lose from public sentiment over the outbreak, as state health officials answer to her.

"Right now all the candidates are weighing their political options, looking around for a theme, and this is a very hot topic right now. The panic is there, and they are acting on it," Bondarenko said.

After receiving the shipment of 300,000 doses of Tamiflu at Kiev's Borispol airport, Tymoshenko said her government plans to increase its hoard of the drug by another 300,000 to 950,000 doses.

"This is the supply that will reliably protect Ukraine," Tymoshenko said, ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

Viktor Yanukovych, the Regions' Party candidate for the presidency, has not commented on the swine flu uproar. Yanukovych, who was beaten in 2005 by Yushchenko, is leading in the polls with a platform that emphasizes closer ties with Russia.

During the past five years of Yushchenko's presidency, relations with Moscow reached historic lows. Yushchenko's approval ratings at home have fallen to single digits in the wake of the economic crisis, which hit Ukraine hard, and years of political gridlock with Tymoshenko.

Hate to say it, but there is no empirical proof that colloidial silver cures or prevents any type of flu or pneumonia, unless it comes from groups associated with the sale and manufacture of colloidial silver. I know you are a huge fan of the stuff, but there really isn't any good hard science that says that it does anything whatsoever to mitigate influenza. Spending enormous amounts of money on silver solutions, nebulizers, etc. might make you feel better from a preparedness standpoint, but it isn't likely to make you any safer. Wash your hands, don't get into huge crowds, don't touch your face or rub your eyes, nose or mouth, and eat a well-balanced diet. Herbal treatments, alternative medicines, and homeopathy are not really effective enough against a viral assault on your system. Silver has some anti-bacterial qualities, but that doesn't translate over to anti-virals.

I don't have the science studies on hand to prove that colloidal silver works,
but from my personal experience when I used it when I had flus I got well much
faster than anyone else who had the same flu.

The cost of the starter kit I posted is around a hundred bucks, while not
a small sum of money it is not extreme to my mind. I have zero experience
with it.

It is a option use your own mind and good luck.

People are free to pursue whatever treatments they wish. Personal experiences with any treatment, or no treatment at all, are anecdotal and not evidence of effectiveness of a course of action in general. You may have been generally healthier, gotten a less severe strain, or had prior exposure that gave you antibodies against that strain. There may be a lot of reasons that would have to be tested and ruled out to narrow it down to the action of the silver being the determining factor. The FDA and CDC have stated that there isn't any compelling science that colloidal silver has any curative or preventative properties, and the FDA in 1999 outlawed any health claims by colloidal silver vendors, relegating it to a "suppliment", like amino acid or calcium tablets. It can interact badly with some medical treatments and drugs and is not recommended by health organizations. As a heavy metal, it stays in the body and collects over the lifetime of the imbiber, eventually causing silver poisoning (argyria), just like any metal like lead or mercury.

I have used it and from personal experience the nasal spray will shut down a sinus infection pretty quick. Husband has used it for that too with good results. Never tried it for anything else though.

The elderberry extract inhibited Human Influenza A (H1N1) infection in vitro with an IC(50) value of 252+/-34 microg/mL. The Direct Binding Assay established that flavonoids from the elderberry extract bind to H1N1 virions and, when bound, block the ability of the viruses to infect host cells. Two compounds were identified, 5,7,3',4'-tetra-O-methylquercetin (1) and 5,7-dihydroxy-4-oxo-2-(3,4,5-trihydroxyphenyl)chroman-3-yl-3,4,5-trihydroxycyclohexanecarboxylate (2), as H1N1-bound chemical species. Compound 1 and dihydromyricetin (3), the corresponding 3-hydroxyflavonone of 2, were synthesized and shown to inhibit H1N1 infection in vitro by binding to H1N1 virions, blocking host cell entry and/or recognition. Compound 1 gave an IC(50) of 0.13 microg/mL (0.36 microM) for H1N1 infection inhibition, while dihydromyricetin (3) achieved an IC(50) of 2.8 microg/mL (8.7 microM). Not much money to made from a existing old treatment like colloidal silver.
Not much interest in doing modern studies of old well known treatments. No
money in it. No patents and no drug sales A home remedy that does not even need a doctor to do.

Now, how much effort would it take to find scientific studies overseas
and old studies in north America that show it works? I doubt the
medical industry would like it very much if someone cranked it up and posted
these studies on every open forum board on the internet.

Not doubt if someone posted such studies on a website that web site would
be shut down one way or another.

These are my honest thoughts, like I said , to the reader use your own
mind and do your own research and trust no one.
