Here's the thing, though: don't add water until you're ready to consume. Once water is added, it starts tasting a little weird after about 24 hours if at room temperature. If you refrigerate it, however, it'll last about 2 weeks.

2 pounds of seeds is a LOT, I'd travel with a few ounces if in a BOB or summat, but to stockpile them, make sure they're in a dry cool place, and they'll be fine as long as moisture stays away.

Hope that helps
It does help, thank you. It answered many questions I forgot to ask. My original question, however, was more directed at a daily intake level. 2 tbsp/day-ish? How many "servings" do you estimate you could get out of 2lbs?

Servings in 2 lbs? Good Lord. A ton. A pound of this stuff is a lot. Since it's next to weightless when dried, and they're really really small seeds, consider a 5 lb sugar bag, cut it in half length-wise, and you got the idea. A tablespoon is an adequate measure for a serving. Once soaked in water for 20-30 minutes, they plump up 9 times their original size, and have the consistency of... well... snot. But they're tasteless and odorless, so you can drink it with water as-is, or supplement some other food that has less nutrition.

Food Extender/Calorie Displacer: The optimum ratio of water to seed, for most recipes, is 9 part water to 1 part seed. One pound if seed will make 10 pounds of Chia gel.

Chia is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, even more so than flax seeds. And it has another advantage over flax: chia is so rich in antioxidants that the seeds don't deteriorate and can be stored for long periods without becoming rancid. And, unlike flax, they do not have to be ground to make their nutrients available to the body. Chia seeds also provide fiber (25 grams gives you 6.9 grams of fiber) as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc.

Chia has a nutlike flavor. You can mix seeds in water and add lime or lemon juice and sugar to make a drink known in Mexico and Central America as "chia fresca." As with ground flax seeds, you can sprinkle ground or whole chia seeds on cereal, in yogurt or salads, eat them as a snack, or grind them and mix them with flour when making muffins or other baked goods.

Default Apache Chia

Oh WOW. I just found this site. It is Apache Chia.

My next bulk of prep plans is seed purchasing and long lasting kept food stores. My parents are TOTALLY not interested in anything I do. It is sad... They merely watch with objective apathy.

I just bought two bags just at $37. One bag is for experimentation, and introducing to my parents and the other bag is for stashing.

Thanks for introducing me to this Tang.

I just got them in the mail. BOY, they're bigger than I thought, the bags that is. I received four bags being 1 lb each, and they definitely have some heft to them. They are about 1 ft long x 3 inches wide and they're called black chia seeds (chemical free).

It says the recommended dosage is to consume 3 tablespoons 3 times a day. You can add it to salads, sandwiches, drinks or smoothies... or even eat plain. I am going to blend it in a drink.

I am not going to eat what is recommended however. I would probably be pooping out seeds 10 years later for crying out loud! joke

Huh, I had no idea that chia pets were edible.....good to know, though. It makes my whole idea of food "growing on the go" all that much easier. You could spread chia seeds all over whatever you are using for transportation and have it available to you whenever and wherever you want.

I like this idea, "food growing on the go", The possibilities of what you could plant it on are endless. That's definitely thinking out of the box.

From what I know, growing them is just one out of three ways to consume them. You can swish them in water and down them that way, or, the way I prefer (and if you have time on your hands while being "on the go"), is to boil water, and then just pour some seeds in to become a lumpy gel of sorts. The water basically collagulates (spell?) all around the seeds. I guess whatever is in the seeds oozes out and attaches to the water molecule, thereby becoming a gel of sorts, which you then can eat like bowl of grits, or mix with jelly, or smoothies, as is recommended.

I will confess however, that I added it in my lean weight gainer shake, and I almost threw that crap up! I blended it up, and in my opinion through experience, wasn't that satisfying. It felt like a lump was in my gut, sitting there like a rock trying to digest. Perhaps I put too much in... I couldn't even finish the whole glass. They are really filling though, so less is more from what I've come to accept.
