Question MRE Question

What's the feeling on MRE's for use in a three day "bug out" pack? Too heavy? Too much volume? Too pricey? Or no fun because you don't have to figure out how to cook them over a pile of smoldering pine cones in a driving rain while huddled under a shelter made out of a Hefty bag and a piece of dental floss?

What's the skinny on MRE's?

I use them all time. I just place the pouch in water and heat them over the fire. Use the hot water after cooking for coffee

i think it is good, easy, and a nice complete meal to have.

Some additional goodies - like using the MRE packing for stuff...

like the outer thicker plastic... used to gather rain water

Cardboard box thingie.... tinder

Matches!!!! wonder what those could be used for...

TP (tinder or to wipe ur bum)

some of the metalish packages are shiny on the inside... perhaps a makeshift signal mirror? (I did this with a pop-tarts wrapper)

Well I guess you could whittle an end and use it as a toothpick to get the rabbit you just cooked over your fire which you started with a firesteel...cause MATCHES ARE FOR WUSSIES! LOL

I agree though, I like MRE's. Think they are a good bang for your buck and like Mac said you can use it for more than just a meal.

I like Dave's idea of heating them in water and using hot water to make coffee afterwards. Also Mac's idea of the many uses of packaging materials.

I've eaten maniy MRE's and do add my own seasonings to some to add more flavor for my own taste. There are lots of different items in one packet to fully nourish one person, myself I always have leftover packets for me to eat later. And yes, they are easy to pack and go with. Also keep a case of MRE's and a case of water in my vehicle for whatever may come along while I am traveling.

I would totally take everything out of their packaging as much as possible to save on space, and if you can, put them in one of those space vacs, where you suck the air out and they are super condensed! Just keep the meals and do away with the extras... Sounds good. They are quite pricey but they are LOADED with calories and nutrients to keep you going.

good for a BOB, there are better things to think about than where the next meal is coming from. just break them down or buy the entrees I want to get away from the bulk.

sometimes though you need the comfort of 'smoldering pine cones', to get that homey feeling.
