Makes sense as everything fresh tastes better.

We can store it longer after things go bad, why should we punish ourselves before?

If you store it properly it should be fine. It does take a little bit of work to keep it that way but well worth it.

Bought a 30# bag of rice in 1998....just finished the last of this spring. The rice was just stored in Tupperwear type containers in the kitchen. It cooked up just as good this past spring as when it was "new".

Where one may run into a problem is storing the rice or anything else for that matter, in places with extreme temperature fluctuation... Above 95* and below freezing may cause condensation problems in the container.

Question Tupperware

Wow it's been a while I've been here. How and where do you get large Tupperware containers? Can you show me an image of the container you used for the rice?

I've been to the Tupperware website but couldn't see any big containers.

The reason for the mylar liner is that plastic buckets are not impervious to oxygen. Over time oxygen will penetrate the plastic and degrade the food inside.

While Tupperware works, I use 5 gallon plastic buckets with Mylar liners for quite a bit, but I also use empty containers I have. The white ones in the picture are empty whey protein containers and the others are 2 liter soda bottles.

Crash -
Can these soda bottles be said to be air-tight? How long can the rice remain eatable in these? If these can work, these are the cheapest and can also be used for water storage for the long-term. I intend to use the rice in 4 - 6 months if these can be used.

I would also like to have a glimpse of the buckets used with the liner. And if possible, the exact method you use to store the rice in them, air-tight.

Sorry, if this was posted earlier, but I couldn't fit a clear picture in my mind.

In that picture I've got brown rice in the 2 liter bottles. Most references I found said you should not store it for more than six months due to the oil content and the possibility of it going bad. For this reason I store it inside where the temperatures are more stable. I have eaten bron rice that I have stored for 2 years and did not notice any difference between that and the fresher stuff. As far as white rice, I have eaten 7 year old rice stored this way and not noticed any difference. The bottles are air/water tight, but I do not put oxygen absorbers in them.

No pictures of the liners, but the buckets are pretty common in this part of the world. Not sure what is available where you are.
