I've seen it in the store but I've never had it. Is it more of a main dish meat pie? Or is it more dessert like? You only hear about it around the holidays.

Mincemeat pie is a classic holiday dessert and one of my all time favorites. A lot of recipes call for the addition of brandy and/or rum to the mincemeat. If you don't make your own, Crosse and Blackwell or Borden's None Such are good brands of jarred mincemeat, but you'll find them expensive. Don't even bother with frozen readymade mincemeat pies, which taste like heavily spiced chopped apples with a handful of raisins thrown in. Not what good mincemeat tastes like at all! The classic well-made mincemeat pie itself is two crust, with the top crust sometimes brushed with beaten egg before baking to impart a shiny glazed look. There is NOTHING like stretching out on the living room floor in front of the Christmas tree, after all the torn wrapping paper and unraveled ribbons and trampled gift boxes have been cleaned away, after the kiddies are sound asleep in bed clutching their new toys, after dark so you can see the pretty lights on the house across the street (the lights those idiots have left up ALL YEAR, being too lazy to get up on the roof and take down), just lying there exhausted and happy with a slice of still-warm mincemeat pie in a paper napkin for a late night snack. And waking up five hours later still lying on the floor with the slice of pie stuck to the side of your face.
