If these $170.00 flashlights sell well, I'd imagine we'll be seeing ultracaps showing up in more products within the next 2 years...just a guess...

I know it sounds great but really is too expensive....just wait for the mass production to kick in and maybe in 2-5 years it'll be $40

I agree it's a really exciting development in storage applications. If they are overcharging, like you mentioned earlier, is there any chance of the Cap's discharging all at once ?

BTW, cool website !

I'm such a sucker for stuff like this.

i work with capacitors quite often( a lot of Midmark and other brand exam/procedure tables incorporate them to start the actuator moving) and ive seen some capacitors pop. big bang, lots of smoke and nasty smell. i just hope theyve thought of that as i wouldnt want to lose a finger from a cap thats gone bad. i remember working under a table once when another tech hit the table up button and the cap exploded its top darn near into my face. im not sure what the MFD(microfarad) range on this light is but the ones im used to handling are 40 to 50mfd caps and can hold quite a wollop if you get hit with one.
interesting tech to say the least

This flashlight is probably just as cool as the one I posted about but it's about 65 dollars cheaper, still expensive but still I think it's a neat one as well Pelican 7060 LED Dual Switch Rechargeable Tactical Flashlight w/ Flash light Holster, AC Charger, Batteries 7060LED FREE Shipping 7060-021-110 7060-011-110 7060-001-110 It's also standard issue for the LAPD.

Only if the terminals of the caps get shorted together, somehow. I never meant to imply that they are "overcharging." That's bad! Rather, I believe they've SAFELY designed the capacitor storage section to be charged to a much higher voltage than is immediately needed by the LED. Most LEDs operate on less than 3V. The ultracap storage pack may be designed to be charged up to 6V or 9V.

I've seen the big boys blow, too, Dave...NASTY!!! However, these are built different than those big starting capacitors. Those guys are often charged to voltages well in excess of 200V. That high electrical "pressure" is what makes them go "bang!"

Ultracaps have a MUCH higher storage capacity than standard industrial caps. Instead of 40 to 50 mfd, the ultracap bank in that flashlight is likely in excess of 10,000,000 mfd...BUT, instead of being stressed to hundreds of volts, they likely have less than 12V of pressure on them...MUCH safer.

gotcha tj. sort of like amperage is what kills you not voltage. you can get killed from 115 vac but take a 500k volt dc stungun and walk away(i can anyways, used to shock each other as teenagers when drinking).

That is one incredible flashlight as TJ described it not to mention 270 peak lumens is incredible for any flashlight.

For a moment I thought that price will go down when they will start to make it in China.

But since it is new on maket, give it couple of years and price will drop regardles of manufacture place.

While ago LED wind up torch was $50 or $60 in Australia, now cheap and nasty ones sell for under $10.
