A couple years ago I had to repair the car remote on my keychain. The plastic part broke off that held it onto the keychain. I improvised and used Spider Wire to repair it (rather than get a new remote). Spider Wire is strong braided fishing line. Well, after all this time it's still holdin' on strong. So, an idea came up to see if I could tether a small firesteel to my keychain. So I gave Spider Wire a try and so far (about a week) it's held up nicely to the typical day to day beating my keys endure. I wrapped the Spider Wire around one end of the Mini Firesteel similar to wrapping 550 paracord around a knife handle. I looped the line under the windings so I could tuck the loose ends and tug on the loop so the line stays tight around the rod. I like this concept because I'm always trying to travel light. I bought a bunch of these from Firesteel.com and plan to put these in my cars, my backpack, survival kits, give some to friends, etc... It's nice to know that just about anywhere I go I'll at least have a means to make a fire. Here's a pic of the Spider Wire I'm using: ![]() Here's a pic of a keychain (obsolete house key) with the Spider Wire and Mini Firesteel:

I'm thinking it's a ranger firesteel ? I love it. Did you use any epoxy or CA on the spider wire? This is an awesome trick. I use the spider wire in R/C Airplanes for bracing and push/pull control lines. I never thought of doing this though. I have an Armageddon and have been trying different handles. I prefer this allot. Thank you for posting the results of real wear and tear. |

I use Spiderwire too. It is used in my fishing kit in my Bob along with a needle to use it for stitching things up if needed. Haven't used it on a lanyard yet...good stuff almost as valuable to your Bob as paracord.

I wonder what other applications spider wire could be used for? I guess it's only limits are the ends of your imagination... Hhmm, I might just put that on my list of things to get. Thanks. ![]() What's the tensile strength? I have 20 lb fishing line, so I wonder what the spider wire can withstand?

According to the Spider Wire packaging (pic above), it's 80 lb test. I'm guessing the 17 lb diameter is comparing it's thickness to a regular 17 lb test fishing line. I just did a quick test and hung a 35 lb barbell from the Spider Wire and it didn't break (even bouncing it a bunch of times). So, not bad if it's only 17 lb test, ha ha. The stuff is pretty strong.
