Default Dead Sled for Extra Gear

I've never had an opportunity to use a dead sled or game cart before but I wanted to pose this question and see if anyone had some perspective.

Quote:
Lightweight, compact, easy to shoulder! OK, so you bagged Mr. Big Antlers in the boonies. Now you can transport your animal out with little effort.

* Rolls up like an archery quiver
* Unrolls in a jiffy to form a 24 x 72" pull Sled
* Made of tough, easy to clean plastic
* 3 tie-down straps and self-locking buckles
* Has hunter orange tether for pulling / dragging or use as a waist harness for hands-free transport
* Weighs 3 1/2 lbs., comes with carry bag and shoulder strap.

Would it be feasible to use something like this for carrying around extra gear so that its not all up on your back? Seems like it might be alot easier to pull it using the waist harness hands-free.

Do you think this could slide pretty easily over most surfaces?

foxfire, those are some great links. I'll be braking my DIY setup out soon. I'll post a pic. Its been great for getting the kids out on the trails in the winter. I used a utility sled from Walmart, very durable and over 1' deep. I used PVC poles from home depot. I also used an old leather weight lifting belt so it can be attached regardless of whether I've got a pack or something else to clip to. I used to just tie rope around waist but so uncomfy hauling 3 kids up hill. for lateral resistance I just cross the poles before attaching to the waist. works great.

I have used that dead sled to haul bear and whitetail in the fall and in the winter we use to use it to haul hay out to the llamas in ths pasture. It makes a huge differance and ours is about 8yrs old and still going.

Sounds like a really good idea, especially if you have kids that are too young to have enough strength to carry their own pack, or to carry heavy canvas semi-permanent shelter halves for a tent big enough for your family, with a few odds and ends strapped down on top of it, or better yet, below it, because that way, whenever you have to stop to set up camp in SHTF scenario, you would grab the tent first, put it up and THEN grab the stuff below it to do what you will with it. The tent will also protect what is below it from the elements somewhat.

Heck, if you can rig it, perhaps just make a simple wagon with only one set of rugged lawn mower wheels in the back, with two handles to hold sort of like an Oriental taxi.
