I have the exact same pair but in the military, sage green version, but they're not waterproof. I signed up for their newsletter to receive the extra 10% discount, and shipping was free. Hard to overlook considering Rocky makes some DANG GOOD boots! I was seriously considering getting their snakeproof Lynx boots, or even their Badger boots, but I wasn't sure how comfortable the soles were, so I opted for what I knew best and had experience with... which is Vibram! WOOT

I was really wanting a snake bite proof boot, which if I let my pants hang over the calves, they would still look like a regular ole' pair of civilian hikers, pretty inconspicuous. In the end, I decided on the lower height for comfort. I will just have to be careful walking through the bush, and look where my feet are going at all times.

Could you imagine how our country would be like if each citizen acted like a pit viper? Gives new meaning to the saying "Don't Tread On Me"!!!
I have just read this entire thread and have had to fight not to wake up my whole family laughing at the snake stuff! My folks/family live in Sarasota and Nokomis and have had numerous snakes in their garages, porches and under cars. I am so freaked out by this each time I visit I make my husband go outside first. I would have to vote for the snake-bite proof ones!
Odd we should be talking about this now as I have to buy new boots for myself and my two teen girls. We need warmth (Chicago and we are going to the Grand Canyon over the holidays)
Are the VIBRAM soles as heavy in weight as they look? I am going to try to get to Cabela's or Bass Pro but wondered about the weight of the boot as my girls are pretty skinny things. Thanks, SG

They're no heavier than regular issued military boots and if they were a tad bit heavier than that, I would still highly recommend them for how ruggedly comfortable they are and how long they last! Besides, sounds like the girls might just need some heavy boots to strengthen their legs. If they start to complain, just tell them that the pain they're feeling is actually weakness leaving the body.

You are hilarious - I will try that but with 17/18 yr. old girls, not so sure they will buy it! Thanks and I will add this to my Black Friday shopping trip! SG

If wearing boots above the ankle doesn't suite them and they would rather have some sort of slipper type footwear, check out the Vibram Five Fingers. I would recommend some knee high socks though because it would be wise to wear snake bite proof gators (which are really light) that could end up rubbing their calves raw without a sock (or cut out shirt sleeve "stocking") to act as a buffer.

The only downside to the Five Fingers, is after wearing them for a spell, and being closer to the ground (or closer to the "energy" given off by the Earth), inevitably... they will become hippies. Strange phenomenon I tell you.

Let's just hope your daughters don't start developing the hobby habit of always scrambling up the nearest tree like a monkey, picking stuff up with their toes and/or growing dread locks, armpit hair with a full fledged facial beard to compliment their newly adopted, natural, earthy lifestyle.

Trust me. I've seen these types of women and they ARE out there!

Well if they begin scrambling up trees it will be in their cute pink dresses and pony tails. How I had such girly girls who knows?! I have seen those types you are talking about and chills run through me each time. What is in those dreadlocks, spiders, small gekkos? They never look clean. Sorry, love long hair, hate dreads. SG

Depending on what season it is, I use a variety of boots. US Army Jungle boots with Dr. Scholl inserts for 3 season bushwacking, a pair of Lowa Renegades for hiking and trailwalking, and for winter, I have: Hunting Boots, Guide Dry 2,000 Gram Thinsulate Ultra Insulation Sentry Boots, By Guide Gear at Sportsman's Guide 2000 gram thinsulate Sentry Boots (good to 80 - 100 degrees F below zero), NEOS overboots N.E.O.S Navigator 5 Overshoes, 44908 | Winter & Rain Boots | Men | FOOTWEAR | items from Campmor. which add 40 degrees to any boot plus are waterproof to 15", and for sitting idle in a blind or ice fishing Arctic boot covers Men's Footwear, Accessories, Boot Insulators, By Arctic Shield at Sportsman's Guide
which reflect about 97% body heat (assuming there was much coming off of the boots and overboots anyway!).

The NEOS Navigator overboots, by the way, are over $100 in other catalogs, but at Sportsman's Guide right now, they have 'em for an obscenely low price of $49.97. Crazy. Men's Neos Navigator Overshoes, Gray / Black, Footwear Accessories, Neos, Neos Vibram Navigator Overshoes Over Boots Golashes Druaflex Polyester Waterproof at Sportsman's Guide

Can't get warmer than that winter set up, I'll tell ya. If you pop on a poly layer sock, a heavy merino or wool blend sock, and if you are planning on wading, a neoprene oversock just in case, you are good to go even in the winter snows up here.

For those of you in southern latitudes who wear sandals to the beach in January, the hell with you! LOL! Some of us have to suffer for months on end!

I got my boots today! I LOVE them. I can EASILY see the potential for some low life being willing to kill someone for a good, rugged pair of boots, considering how MUCH better off you will be having a pair on your feet when your chips are down.

I don't think I will have to break them in because I don't feel any section rubbing the wrong way... of course, I will have to walk quite a few miles in them first to be 100% sure though, and then walk quite a few miles with a heavy pack to make double sure!

I am blessed!!!
