if you arent a fisherman then have a look at speedhooks, they self set saving your reflexes, are super light and come with bait and cord if you get the aircrew version.

along with night lines it might give you the chance of getting some protein while you learn the subtle art of staring at a bit of wet string

It's sort of like standing by a forest trail with a club, waiting for a rabbit to come along so you can whack it on the head. Dig a pit or rig a trail snare and get on with your business.
ColcordMama is correct, but in some parts of the country funnel diversions are hard to establish due to the extremely soft, silty bottom. Traps work well but take a decent amount of time to construct .

I think you would be better off setting limb lines with two hooks each or possibly a trot line with circle hooks . A minimum amount of effort is needed and it will probably work just as well.

Don't buy one John Lee make it your self. It will be far better than the ones you buy in a store. Just get a 200 or longer roll of nylon staging and package of hooks (stainless steel circle hooks are the best). Pull off about 20' of staging and tie half hitch with a loop with about 10 inches of loop hanging below the main line. Then measure off approximately 5' and do it again as many times as need until you have the trot line as long as you want it. Usually anything over 10 hooks is gloing to be more trouble than it is worth. Be sure to leave about 20 feet of line on each end of the trot line to tie it off to the bank, tree limb, stumps or whatever.

The easiest way to pack and carry trot lines is to use a bucket. Place the loose line up to the first hook in the bucket, then tear off a page from a phone book, catalog, etc. and place it on top of the hook. Repeat the procedure until you get to the end of the trot line. Then do the same for the next trot line until you have all your trot lines in the bucket.

When you get ready to hang the trot line you take the loose end of a trot line out and tie it to what ever you want and the drift, motor or paddle yourself to the place you want to tie the other end of the trot line off (be sure to tie the trot line as tight as you can get it. You can pull yourself back down the line to bait up and tie a couple of weights in a couple of spots on the trot line to hold it close to the bottom.

Pretty simple and very effective. You can make the trot line a little better by tying swivels on the drop and then put you hook on, this will keep some of the catfish from twisting off.

You can also put a small peice of inner tube on the pvc for a grip too. Spool some line on about 2" from the top of the pvc, fill with tackle and your done. Now you have a self-contained fishing kit that you can cast and that will hold all of your tackle.

The tackle i have in my fishing kit
10 - #6 Hooks
10 - #8 Hooks
5 - #10 Hooks
30 - 3/0 Slit Shot Sinkers (Removable)
1 - Small Stick Bobber
1 - Midium Stick Boober
1 - Small Stierfoam Bobber
4 - 1/16 oz. Jig Heads (2 Bright Colors, and 2 Darker Colors)
2 - 1/16 oz. Rooter Tails (1 Bright Color, and 1 Natural Color)
1 - Small Plug (Natural Color)
1 - Sewing Bobbin spooled w/ 10 lb test FireLine
Spooled on my kit 100' of 10 lb test FireLine

For bigger tackle i have made a drop line kit, for this i have a spool of 160 lb test drop line with a sinker bag that holds all of my tackle. In this kit i have four 1 oz. egg sinkers, four 4/0 circle hooks, and four #5 barrel swivels. I have rolled the bag up and put it in the center of the drop line spool, i have taken two good sized corks and put a small cotter pin in each of them so i can use the corks for bobbers if i wanted too. With the tackle in the center of spool i put a cork on each end of the spool so now i have self-contained drop line kit as well.
I'd love to see pictures of your setup, if you don't mind. I've recently learned to fish a little bit (mostly saltwater) and would love to add this capability to my kit bag.

Fishing yo yos and gill nets are efficient- so much so mere possession in some states will get you arrested, so find out first. If you are going to use hooks BUY THE VERY FINEST. A premium hook is far sharper and wont rust. Sharp hooks= better sets and fewer escapes. You do want ONE big huge hook and a small nail that fits the eye. You are going to take your knife and scribe a cut on one end to lay the shaft in. Now hammer the tiny nail into the eye, whip some cord or even duct tape and you have a GAFF HOOK. Nothing is more tragic than losing a fish at the very last.
The late survival instructor Chris Janowsky of Alaska sold a superb kit. The salient feature was a functional casting rod! He included a piece of wood @ the dimensions of an Altoid lid and maybe 3/8" thick with full triangular cuttouts on the two short ends and 4 notches on the lower angles of hte triangles. You cut a suitable whippy branch, lashed the block on the thick end which held the line. Several safety pins lashed on the pole became eyes to feed the line and PRESTO! A very functional rig.

Default Fishing Kit and Drop line Kit!

I don't have a way to post pictures right now but I am planing on get a new camera here in a few weeks and I would be happy to post some pictures of my fishing kits then. I got the idea for my fishing kits from Dave Canterbury he is a survivalist that posts videos on youtube. Dave has a video posted there were his friend is fishing with his kit and he has another video posted were he is showing his drop line kit and frog gig kit (I have also made me a gig kit as well to complete my fishing system). You can find these videos at youtube.com/WildernessOutfitters He also has a website for his Pathfinder School that is WildernessOutfittersArchery.com. You can buy the fishing kit on CanteenShop.com for $14, they are not sealing them right now because they are a seasonal item they will be returning in the spring, but if you go to the website you can find a pictures of the fishing kit under the Hunting/Fishing/Trapping part of the site. I how ever made my own fishing kit and drop line kit both. I made four fishing kits for $8 and that's with tax, with out the tackle. I don't think they sell the drop line kit any more or at lest it's not on the website right now, I made a drop line kit for my self for about $9 the most expensive part of the drop line kit is corks or it was for me I couldn't find the size I needed anywhere and I finally found the size I needed at a speciality hardware shop we have here in my town and I paid $2.50 per cork you can probably find them cheaper some where but I couldn't I looked at arts & craft stores, Lows, Home Depot etc. and I could not find them big enough to keep a float with a 1 oz. sinker on the line.

The video with the fishing kit is called Pathfinder Fishing Trip.

The drop line kit video is called Pathfinder Fishing Kit Part 2 (More Kits)

P.S.
He also has what is called the Sling Bow it is a sling shot set up with a Whisker Biscuit arrow rest so it can shoot arrows that have been modified by taking out the nock and replacing it with a golf tee that you have glued in so you can grip the arrow when it is in the pocket on the sling shot band. It can even be set up for bow fishing too.

This is also shown on the Pathfinder Fishing Trip video. There is also a video on setting up the Sling Bow for fishing. This video is called Sling Bow (Bow Fishing Mod How To)

I'm in the process of making me one right now and man are they nice!

I hope this helps you build to the game getting part of survival kit.

My question to you guys is, what weight line would you pack, size hooks, size sinkers, etc?

Any advice/suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I have been a devout fisherman all my life from freshwater, brook, salt. You should keep a small red devil lure, a mepps spinner and a couple of panther martin lures in your kit. The diversity of fish you can catch with them is unlimited as well as the locations. Also stren monofilament is the best line bar none of any monofilaments. Braided line is fantastic stuff but they tangle/knot easily and are very hard to get out. Another problem with braided line is the point of impact strike. There so strong tensile wise they lack stretch so sometimes you will lose your fish and your leader, spinner, sinker, etc because it will snap on you from that initial strike. I have honestly pulled my grumman boat and canoe over to logs and unhooked my setup using 14 lb extra strength stren line.

Hope this was useful.
