Haven't tried the yo-yo's, but a wet fly tied to a 10 pound or better line around 20' long and anchored to a limb an inch or larger in dia. works. Of course it is not legal where I live so I would never do that. (disclaimer) . Of course any unattended line can be hit or miss, but worth the effort.

Patrick,
The good thing about these yo-yo's is that a wire 'trip' that is set snaps to set the hook. They'll pull small fish out of the water if it's set up off the water too high.

I have read the descriptions on how they work and such. I haven't tried them yet. I guess they aren't real high on my list of gotta have. I am sure that they work as designed. I understand that they were intended for pilot survival kits. That should be an indication right there as to how good they are. I will have to check and see if they are legal in Washington State.

Here's a brief story about a couple of fishermen catching a ton of cats in one night using these Yo-Yo's: Night Hawk Publications - John's Journal

I'm sold.
