A ruger hawk like the Super Red Hawk? really NICE gun. we're not allowed to carry a pistol at all here. Surprised we're even still allowed to have them at all. (Corzine recently signed a 1-a-month law that only allows us to purchase one handgun a month.. but we already needed to get permits before purchasing them anyway and were limited to only being able to get 3 at a time. they take a month or so to get anyway and are only good for 90 days from the day they issue them... not the day you receive them... there have been cases where the local PD will sit on them and then call you with only a month or so left on it)
If you mean a real bird,... will that help ward off anything?

As for carrying the shotgun, it's the hunting choice we are limited to in NJ. No centerfire and no rimfire for anything except dispatching trapepd animals (which you need to have a trappers license for as well as a rifle license for) and groundhogs.

So to hunt squirrel, i need to use a shotgun with #6 shot. so i figured i would keep some slugs with me. (but for clarification, NJ small game doesnt allow anything over #4 and slugs are by law supposed to be shot from something with iron sights or a scope.)

unfortunately there are a decent number of bear here and they have grown familiar with people and what they have to offer. I have seen a mother and two 300lb cubs wander down my street then head into a back yard and continue across the yards.

They are here and unfortunately abundant. Again, I'm not afraid of them, but would like to know that IF it was to happen I am prepared.

thanks for all the responses.

I think he means a tomahawk, actually.

I can see carrying the slugs with me, but loading them sounds like it would violate NJ Fish & Game rules, and you might get into some trouble with a warden for keeping them in the shotgun at all.

That sucks about the 1 a month law. Wow, I didn't know any of the Eastern States (other than NY City and Wash. DC) had such draconian laws against guns. You'd think the citizens there would be more active about getting that repealed.

Uh, how many handguns do you buy in a month?

As many damned handguns a month as we like here in the United states. Unless the messiah attempts to ditch the Second Amendment, we still trust our citizens to be armed in this country. Whether you buy one or 25 handguns a month, an honest citizen is just that.

I just can't imagine a situation where I would need to buy more than one handgun a month. Nor can i see any benefit from having such a restriction on purchasing handguns.

I see it is a matter of principle more than one of necessity.

Back on topic. There's black bear where I hunt squirrel as well & I carry either a couple double 00s or a couple slugs with me when I'm out there as well, However, as CW said before NOT IN THE GUN!!! Now I'm not familiar with your area, but around here, the game warden can & will hang you on the cross if he assumes you're hunting whitetail out of season, & if he inspects your chamber & sees a big deer load in there, he's gonna take you in, impound your gun & vehicle, & you"re gonna have a long time in a little cell to think about what it was he thought you were doin'.

So the obvious thing to do is chat with the CO, tell him what you`re thinking, and see what he says about it. No one can begrudge you defending yourself, and these guys have any leeway they want in any situation......make him a friend, and you`ll likely be just fine.

wow....it;s threads like this that make me sooo glad i'm in Hawaii....my only concern?...that darn scorpion or centipede that just scurried past my foot....but back on point, the idea is being prepared nothing wrong with needing and having it in my opinion...better than needing it and NOT having it...i have this hunting partner .....now he SOO overkills on the gun carrying deal,we're lucky that when it's bow season,we can still carry a large handgun out in plainsight etc,etc,...i swear he's wanna be SWAT...lol...during GUN season he'll STILL pack 2....2 ...handguns PLUS his ar-15.......we're hunting pigs here guy's so,and there is no danger of a bigger animal coming after us...but hey i love this guy and he can bring all the guns he wants..but HE carry's em..lol....me....308 cuz that's all i got and that's all i can afford....more guns?...would love 'em...but can't afford it ...but my friend can so he does...in my opinion about prepping for bears....do what you gotta cuz if anything DOES happen.....everyone's gonna say "he should have carried slugs"....lol

I never really thought of the issue that the CO might think i was going for deer. I really only had this planned for JIC bear, and the deer out of season didnt even cross my mind. Thanks for pointing that out!

Either way, I did end up only loading one #6 and left the two slugs in my pocket, but easily accessible. Figure that has to be the happy medium.

I have been reading more and the people who do hunt the areas i am in say the areas are 'inundated' with them. I know they're there and they are not as shy as people would like to make them out to be.

So hopefully this is a good compromise and will keep me out of trouble with some power hungry CO.

I also have a call into the lawyer my shooting club has on retainer and will ask him what the worst case scenario is.
