Default Bait nets and fish traps

I carry in my pack a ten foot sane net. It's light weight and easy to use. I have caught bait and even some pan fish with it. I also carry a cast net in my SUV with my "heavy gear" or "V-gear" as I call it. What are some thoughts on nets for survival? I am going to buy an Umbrella Dip Net bait trap as well. Any one use one of these? I use crayfish and bait traps all the time but never this one.

Crab Trap Bait Fishing Wire Bait Cast Umbrella Dip Net, Umbrella Dip Net

Default nets

An obvious point.... if the SHTF, all bets are off as far as the "legality" of using nets and snares goes. But you need to watch your fanny when testing out your gear beforehand

I've got a couple of seines also. Worth acquiring the skill to make others. It's simple knots but there are some tricks to it if you're interested. We had another conversaton about yo-yo's a augmenting fishing. Jug lines and limb line (if you've got the hooks) are options. Cast nets are very good to have. Common in this area and very cheap at garage sales etc. There is a definite art to throwing cast nets too.

Well, I am a pro when it comes to the use of both the saine and the cast net. And in the state of Illinois it is legal to use them to catch bait. However, the saine net is under 20oz and the cast net is over 5lb. So I do not carry the cast net in my BOB. I keep it with the SUV. Still I wonder, this Umbrella Net trap, how well will it stand up to use? I stand behind having a net in the wild as it can be used for more then just fishing.

S.N.I Question Would you carry a small cast net in your B.O.B? and how big and where to get one? Thanks for your time.

I use a fishtrap for crawfish and another I made. That umbrella looks like it would be for alot of uses fish, eels, crawfish, probably be a fat turtle in it every now and again!

I learned to use a cast net years ago and I am glad that I did. In a survival situation, I will be the first to confess that all bets are off concerning rules and regulations as far as taking fish.
Although it takes a little while to get the hang of throwing a cast net it is a skill worth learning.

In my book Survival Wisdom and know how, it says that quality fish nets are an AWESOME tool to have as far as its effectiveness in helping keep you alive and fed, but it is very cumbersome and heavy to pack into camp...

Anybody have any good experience with small, potentially tightly rolled fish net? Links?
