Learning how to Use a FireSteel

Our home is in a black hole as far as a clear southern sky, so we have not yet invested in solar panels. We do use a small hydroelectric wheel called a "Harris" wheel. The water comes down the mountain from a spring via 1 inch pipe to the wheel. The power is generated via that and is stored in batteries and then inverted via an Outback system, which converts the power to 110. We can run our lights, small stereo and when the batteries are fully charged, we can turn on our propane gas dryer. Our Sun Frost refridgerator is hardlined in to the batteries. We have had our system for about four years now and we are always on the look out for better and less costly batteries. We do our net on a satilite system by wildblue. The competitor for wild blue is Hughes satilite or Star Band. Due to our location it is like having the old days of dial up We have learned to do other things while waiting for the computer to load web pages. Our home is located on a north westerly slope so we do have ample garden sun, just not enough for solar yet. Have been slowly buidling our capacity for gardening but due to the reality of working in town, we are not able to spend as much time with our land work. Thanks for the kind greetings and welcom, Tri

Welcome to the pack. The Harris is what I modeled my newest prototype in home gen system. Well, I got some ideas from it anyway.

Trident,
You only just joined this Great Forum, but you are an expert in quite complicated survival area.

Sometimes it was a blessing to be able to make a cup of tea or make quick dash to do something while pages were loading, but often it is bit of a curse too.

We will happily learn from your experiences.
