Default Hello from Northern California

Greatings to all who learn and share their knowledge here,

I am new to “bush craft/survival training etc. I have a son involved in scouting and I am learning on the fly. I will drop in as time allows. I will probably “Lurk” in the background and try to soak it all in.

Thanks in advance for all I glean from those posting in this place,

Opie

Mighty friendly folks around here, and to think aunt Bea said venturing out of Mayberry was a dangerous idea.

Default Welcome to Survival Topics!

If you're interested in learning more than bushcraft, one BIG way to do that is to use field guides, perhaps like the Peterson Field Guides to know your particular environment more intimately, as it were. I have five of them I just ordered like a couple weeks ago and HIGHLY recommend them. You can get them for dirt cheap on Amazon, but I recommend you choose the Used-like new books offered. If you get the Used, they will look like that, like someone literally pulled it out of some corner of their book drawer where it was wedged in between their other books.

Look at it like you're doing your homework. They are small enough to take wherever you go and stow in your pack. I hope you are able to involve yourself with your son's scouting expeditions, because the more you get out, the quicker you will develop your own "system" as it were. Everybody has their own system in the way they carry gear. You learn what works (for you) and what you can do without. The more you are able to do without, the better you are off because you will know more in what you can use that is already available in nature, and your load will indefinitely be lighter, which will make the experience that much more enjoyable. Hopefully, others will learn from your example and start throwing out everything one really doesn't need out and about.

Welcome, and please continue joining us and post questions if you have them!

Welcome aboard, Opie! Learning to fly, too? I hope your arms don't get too tired....

Yes, this is a friendly place, and loaded with good info! Enjoy!
