My God, I think I'm in love. "A girl has to accessorize," followed by a comment on which boot knife goes with which outfit...

I remember hearing my grandmother say, "Horses sweat, men perspire, and women glow."

To the topic at hand: collecting for collecting's sake never made much sense to me. Well, unless it applied to something *I* want to collect. I have, for example, probably a dozen headlamps around the house. Seriously, I think there's one in each room of the house, plus extras in drawers, the garage, my car, etc.

But I have used them, if only to go out at night and see which cat or raccoon the damn dogs are barking at at 3 a.m.

A glass case full of pattern Damascus, mammoth ivory handled, artisan masterpieces that cost thousands of dollars...who in their right mind would try to baton firewood with one of those? Not that there isn't INCREDIBLE skill and craftmanship in those knives, but aside from being viewed as artwork, what good are they?

As I've heard, Jay Leno owns several hundred cars, but the cool thing is that they are all maintained in running order, and he *drives* them all, even his vintage Stanley Steamers (I saw a TV show once).

I have probably a dozen SAKs, but they've all seen blood, dirt or pine sap.

And another thing! (I'm on a roll here.) The Ray Mears bushcraft knife...that is a thing of beauty, but at...what, $700?...I'd be terrified to use it because then I'd have to sharpen it, and what if I slipped and scratched it?

Of course, if I had $700 to spare on Ray's knife or one of those $3000 Damascus-and-mammoth-ivory beauties, I probably wouldn't have a problem buying a new one if the old one got dirty...

Is that too snotty? Is my green showing?

Have a great day, all.

I think collecting "show" knives isn’t bad as long as they are usable. Whether you choose to use them is another story. I have a limited (only 150 made) Damascus blade Masters of Defense CQD automatic. I bought from a store that had nooooo idea what they had on there hands. This knife is now slowly rising in value and I don’t use it. But! I know full well that it is an extremely capable knife that I could put through hell and back if I needed to and it would not let me down. Personally I love tactical folders and uhm I may have more than a few of those.... but I swear I don’t have a problem!

When I was younger I got a lot of questions about my knife collecting. After I turned 18 and began collecting weapons in general, from different parts of the World and varying eras, they seemed to no longer question it. So I guess diversifying your arsenal is one way to stop the stupid questioning of your collecting habits. Plust it's cool to have various weapons at your disposal. If all bullets were gone and everyone else were using gardening tools, knives and clubs as weapons, I can pull out a sword, mace, morning star or many other various objects that will likely leave my opponents britches soiled....lol

I to have a knife collection. Everytime some visits my house they ask why so many knives. I tell them each a story about each one and then they seem more intrested in them. The bottom line is. When i get asked about why my collection is so big is because their art, historical, or sentimential. My 1982 boyscout knife is in there. I don't use it anymore but it has a place in my life that i don't want to give up.

Other knives I've either bought in other countries or made my self. The one that throws every one off is the Blacksmith one i did back in college. I used a railroad spike and made it into a frontier knife. Everyone asks why. I tell them just because i got a hair up ass and made. Never used it for skinning but it looks so cool in the case, that people can imagine how thing were back then.
