Garrett same here. Never used folders but if I had to chose one. A carbon V cold steel trail guide comes to mind. The large model.

any knife that is around in my time of need... im a college student and a waiter, so on my job and in school i dont carry a knife ... even when hanging out with friends i dont have one- even if we are in a bad part of the city (ive trained with Maryland's best MMA fighter -hes a good friend, so i can hold my own pretty well). But for going in the woods i kinda like to change things up and often carry a different knife(s) than the last time. But i do always have a victorinox SAK (tinker) in my bob pack and a leatherman wave in my glove box. In the woods or on the trails I just usually have a 4 or 5" fixed blade on my pack, a victorinox SAK (camper) in my pack side pocket, and a schrade cliffhange folding linear lock in my pocket- as it has a pocket clip and a carabiner with lanyard that attaches to my beltloop. I also have the ranger firesteel and scraper always attached to that and a ziploc bag in my pocket(for emergency water storage) JIC i get seperated from my pack.

Default knives

Best fixed blade is the Timberline SpecWar but have fun trying to find one since it hasnt been made in years. A nice inexpensive fixed is the Buck Nighthawk. As far as folders go, if defense is what you want then you have to go with the Spyderco Civillian however, this knife is literaly only good for disemboweling and cutting rope. If you want something a little more diveres and well rounded then I suggest the Emmerson CQC 7.
