VERY nice, Poco! Can you share some details? What's the blade made from? What kind of wood is the handle? Does that diamond stone fit inside its handle?

Wow that is a beautiful knife. I hope to own some of Mook's work soon, just can't justify the expenditure right now maybe after Christmas.

Yes the diamond stone fits in the handle which makes for a very nice little package. I believe it is O-1 steel. The Handles are Oak if I am correct. I had spoke with Mook and asked which handles were heaviest.(Seems to make for an easier working knife for me) The balance point is right where the front pin is.(Something nice to know if you ever have to actually throw a knife) The knife I have is the one in the middle of the 5 he posted in this thread. The missus had to take our oldest to the Emergency Room to get stitches. Running with a stick, fell and cut/tore a 1"gash on his jaw. So I can't go out and play since the youngest wants to stay in and watch videos.(Same one for the 15th time this week)Land before Time dontcha know?OK they are back now 5 stitches and 2 hours later. Doctor was happy with him as a patient. Said he was glad he handled it so well. Kind of proud of him. Speaking of being Proud of Sons. Mook's Son is going to be home for Thanksgiving, from the military. He is bringing home a friend. Just want to say Thanks to Mook for supporting the troops that can't make it home for the holidays with their own Family, By having one this Thanksgiving. Mooks son(the one he called "Shop Monkey") Mark was there with him last night and Mook has a lot to be proud of. Both were taller than I had imagined from the pics I had seen. WOW!! A Sharp shinned or Coopers Hawk just landed outside my window!! I'm liking this Farm life more and More!!

Dang, now that is DEFINITELY a good skill to have! If I made that I would be very proud, so way to go Mook, and congratulations Poco! I don't know if you prefer it the way it is, but I would consider grinding in one of those notches to separate the edge from the handle a bit, make sense? And concerning your firesteel set up, maybe you can see if you can either shorten the lanyard or just twist it to make it more taut picking up slack so you can lash it around the bottom end of the firesteel, thereby reducing the potential of it catching on branches and being pulled out as you make your way to your wooded man cave, and not even notice or be the wiser.

Thanks, Poco. I really appreciate the kind words. My goal is to make a solid user knife; if it looks good, that's a happy bonus. The firesteel: actually, I made the lanyard just the right length so you can stretch it around the lower end of the firesteel and sort of lock the steel in place. On my newest iteration of this setup, I'm gluing and pinning the firesteel to a handle (of the same wood as the knife handle), eliminating the lanyard altogether. I did incorporate a relief notch at the near end of the edge. It's a little too small to see in the photos, but it's there It saves a little wear on the corners of my sharpening stones that way. Poco's knife has white oak scales. It's less porous and denser than red oak, and looks a little more rustic, to my eye. And I'm going to Woodcraft in Nashville tomorrow to see if I can buy some neat wood for handles. By the way, Poco, according to Kentucky Revised Statute 500.080 (4)(c), a hunting knife isn't considered a "deadly weapon" for purposes of "carrying a concealed deadly weapon." Just a tidbit, but thought a fellow Kentuckian might be interested. For the rest of you, consult your local laws. |

Yeah I knew that a hunting knife is legal Carry. But I don't wear one when I go to BG, I'm a little leery of "big City Cops" LOL. But here at Home I wear mine everywhere Except for places it is illegal to have any weapon, Work, courthouse, etc. I did get a chance to whittle some with it today. But that is all I have done so far. Hoping to get some "Dirt time" soon. Those weren't kind words, those were truths! LOL Mook is right the relief notch is small but it is there!! Mook also showed me his firesteel with wooden knob, which will be a great addition. The Firesteel fits real snug in the loop so even if I don't use the lanyard to "Lock" it in it stays where it's put. I think that should be maintainable with the loop even as the 'steel gets worn. All I should have to do is wet the leather of the loop, I think that will let it draw up some as it dries. When a 'steel is replaced with a new one it should be able to be wet and stretched again. Not that I want to do a lot of that, only as absolutely necessary. Even though I whittled some I can't tell any difference in the blade's sharpness.
