trouble is with these sites is that the imagery and maps are more than 10 years old. I know this because two main roads in my area have changed path completely and still are not shown at their correct path. how ever the terrain is other than the new roadbed is pretty much the same.(we're using these for my brother's farm)

we have this same problem in this area there is constant change. i have found that paying special attention to the creeks and valleys then you can get a better idea where you are. for example i was searching for a specific area, and by my topo's my access was the 2nd left after entering the pink mountain forest service rd. problem was there was a bunch of new roads and covered in snow i could not really get good sense as to what was old road and what was new. my saving was that on my map i could see that there were 4 creeks to cross then my road and this is how i found it.

The link I posted together with the usgs lets you download the new 2009 digital satellite photo topo maps as well as the standard 7.5 topo format as a pdf file FREE. They are the new generation maps made from satellite photos superimposed with utm grids, road info etc. Like I said they are 2009 maps I downloaded superior valley near fort irwin, ca last night. They are big files that one is almost 15 megs so I cant post here to show you

On their page about the upper right you will see a "try it now" link. click that it brings up their software page. There will be a brown rectangular link on the left center of the page that says download now or something. click that and save to your computer after install go to the USGS map page and use their "Map Locator" to find the map you want. A map of the US comes up and you drag and click to select an area. you will get the idea. once you find the area click on the radio button on the right of the map area that says locate or select something like that and click the quadrangle you want, that will put a red "pin" on that area. left click that pin and your options to download show up. download the map you want. after downloading the PDF file of the map, click on it and the terrago toolbar will automatically load with adobe acrobat reader (You have to have that installed too) and show the map . let me know if you have problems I'll try to post a link to the actual download page but I don't know if it will let me. the famous ntsc topo maps of canada are available for free. along with landsat 7 and all sorts of other maps and images. most are already geo-referenced and will open in the correct position in memory-map, arc-gis, or most other map making programs. check them out here... GeoGratis - Home i use them all the time. they are the same maps you would buy in a map shop if you ask for canadian topo maps.
