Default Finding Your Way Without Map or Compass

I thought I'd share the title of this great book I've been studying for a while now. It's called, "Finding Your Way Without Map or Compass" by Harold Gatty.

For those of you interested in learning to navigate without all that expensive gear (or even a compass) then this book is the definitive guide. It goes way beyond the typical navigate-by-the-stars method and includes navigation by the sun, moon, tides, prevalent winds, vegetation, and so on.

Check it out!

I have that book. It is a decent read, but the author is VERY long winded. I really liked his historical input as far as how islanders plotted coarses by following birds, and how to see the reflection of land in clouds, etc.

Yeah, it is a decent book for the few gems it most certainly has, but again, it is highly over intellectual in verbose, and long winded to an extent.

There are so many things you can do and see which can help you navigate without either. Depressions on rivers or streams edges, small broken branches, deer trails or human trails, moss growth on certain side of trees depending on hemisphere, plant, berries, tree life depending on times of year, and space navigation etc.

It's easy to judge one thing by its cover. Its another to understand why and for what it is worth in your region of the world.
