check out this link where I learned all about them.
http://therucksack.tripod.com/landnav.htm#pacecounting
The tan color "beads" in the pic are not beads at all, they are identical looking knots, but are fixed stoppers. only the red are beads. there are 4 on top, 9 on bottom. They are commonly used where a bead represents 100 meters, or as I use them 1 bead represents 1/10 mile. After you slide bottom 9 beads you continue to count but when you reach "tenth" bead, you slide all 9 back up and slide one of the top 4 down. Therefore every top bead equals 1 mile (or 1,000 meters if you are doing metric). Repeat until you've slid top 4 beads down. When you would have reached "fifth" bead on top, you slide everything up and start over, knowing you've gone 5 miles. does help?

snow i'm so glad you are putting them to good use. i've got some paracord coming soon so I think i'm gonna try a set for myself with inner strands removed (should result in overall smaller version)

I've made tons of sets of beads the cheap craft store way. my favorites, however are my hand made sets, all from cord including the beads. the one in the pic is the one that took the longest to make, because of the detail in each bead. it's a little too big and not what I use regularly, but works out great for winter since big beads are easier to slide w/ gloved hands.
Gorgeous!!

Are those anything like the knots I've used to gauge depth when diving?

I.E 1 knot per atmosphere so I know where to stop when visibility is such that my gauge isn't clear?

If so, can anyone point me in the direction of where I can properly learn to use them?

a simple multi use set can be made using ball type cordlocks, that way if you dont like em you still have something to help hold your pants up
