Default Large Space Blanket

Last night I picked up one of those larger, reusable space blankets. Blaze orange/red on one side, reflective on the other. Grommet holes in each corner, measures 5' by 7'. It's waterproof, packs down fairly small and seems fairly durable...and affordable - I think I paid $12 or so. Seems like a must-have item in the bush.

I'm planning on using this as a tarp shelter for an upcoming camping trip. Has anyone used these in the past? Any pros or cons you wish to share?

Yup! I just used one this past weekend. It's great. It's the "true" and original "Space Blanket." I was inside a Eureka Timberline x2 tent with lightweight sleeping bag, and near freezing temps. I covered myself with the Space Blanket and slept like a baby...toasty warm.

I agree, this is the same space blanket I always carry. It lives in the bottom of my daypack. A thousand potential uses and they are quite tough.

I would very much like to find the same material but 7 feet x 7 feet or 7 feet x 9 feet. Been thinking of stitching two pieces together.

Not a bad idea Ron. The only negative I can forsee in my blanket is the size. I'm about 6'3" tall and with my sleeping bag being even longer, it almost goes the full length of the blanket when used as a shelter.

If you stiched two together, what would you use to seal any holes?

Or I wonder if you could possibly attach zippers to one side of two blankets and zip them together as needed, similar to what you can do with two sleeping bags? Waterproof zippers?

Or maybe velcro strips?

Yes Craig, they are just a little too small in my opinion (but useful none-the-less).

I have two of the exact same blankets in my BOB. I have used them, and I just love them. They are well worth the price paid for them.

I found these space blanket sleeping bags at Walton Feed. They are 3x7 and they work great. They are small enough to carry in a pocket. I have been carrying several in the car and used them twice when we got snowed in on the highway. The price is also great. http://waltonfeed.com/category/1
