There are easier ways to build underground. Here’s a good reference which I have in my my library:
Amazon.com: Earth-Sheltered Houses: How to Build an Affordable...: Rob Roy: Books
Here’s a cute one; apparently cost $5000 to construct:

Hey, I was going to move into one of those, my uncle's house, but then Gandalf came and then there was this ring problem, we were gone for months, and when I got back...no, wait, that wasn't me, that was Frodo. Dang LOTR movies! Always get that confused with real life.

Another book you might want to check out is titled Modest Mansions, by Donald Prowler. His whole focus is on building tiny to small; but giving the home a spacious feel and appearance. It's a Rodale Press book, and full of good ideas.

LOL, If I'm gonna be anyone in that movie, it's Strider. A "Don't take no crap from anybody" Ranger that's 100 years old, still looks and fights like that, and gets Liv Tyler on top of it all. Wicked with a bow and a sword too. Better than a hairyfooted hobbit that's for sure. Hehehehe.

Oh YEAH, I forgot that Peter Jackson turned that farmer's field into a real Hobbit town, and the guy kept it up as a tourist attraction afterward.

Apparently, the crew planted flowers and veggies a year ahead of the shoot, so that the place looked "lived in" by the time the extras showed up to be the Hobbits. Gotta love that kind of attention to detail.

Not all that impressive eh? I wish they had left the canyon they made into Helm's Deep as it was in the movie. Now THAT looked wild. Or the treehouses of Rivendell. It's hard to believe they went through all that work to make REAL buildings and everything, only to tear it all apart within months of shooting.

Do you live on the North or South Island, LPM??
