Default Log Cabin

Does anybody know where I can find resources on how to build a log cabin? I think this would be a good skill in a post-SHTF scenario if one has to bug out to the middle of nowhere.

Order Alone in the Wilderness by Dick Proenneke. Not only does he show you how to build one but its a classic, with alot of extra footage of Alaska. Anyone who hasent seen it should. I bought a copy and watch it about once a month. You can google it for more info.

I agree with Stairman, that is an outstanding video. I've also read his daily journals, which go into more detail. Both are great resources.

Building a log cabin by hand is something I'd love to do someday. But I'm not sure it would be a practical solution for shelter in a SHTF situation because of the amount of time and labor involved...but still a great skillset to possess.

I also kind of want to know how to make a crude log cabin. In a mountain range near-bye to me i have found over 20 small cabins 5ft by 10ft. I imagine they just camp out there everyonce in a while.

Is this something you actually plan on building? Or just gathering informations?

Personally, if it was a survival situation and I was going to be there for a while, I think I would do something underground.

First, it will be a lot easier for you to dig a hole than it would be to chop down a lot of trees, notch em, move them where you want them, then STACK them. If you were alone, unless you had some pretty good equipment that you could use to fashion a pully and rig, I don't think building a log cabin would be a realistic plan.

Dig your hole, put up support poles, lash longer poles to the supprorts by rolling them over the hole (no lifting necessary) then set up your roof and enjoy.

I could go into a lot more detail, but you can get the idea. If you want more info on that, I can probly throw ya a few links.

Just food for thought

The Reader's Digest hardcover book "Back to Basics" has this information and so much more, including hows to for homemade wells, outhouses, heating stoves, gardening, animal husbandry, fish ponds, hunting-slaughtering-dressing kill, canning and dehydrating, even tanning hides. There's lots more that I can't even list here. I wouldn't be without my copy, ever. Check one out from your local large library so you can decide if you want to buy one, and if you buy one, get it cheaper secondhand at a large thrift store or online.
