I took the Hennesy plunge with an expedition model. So far I am pleased, my only complaint is the lack of trees 12-15' apart. Fortunately I do a lot of vehicle camping and rigged a pole to fit in my trailer hitch, now I just need one on site anchor point.

Although they have a good reputation for durability, I still take my tent. After a few more outings, I may develop enough trust to leave the tent at home.

Hammock Forums : Your Number One Hammock Community Go there, I have been hanging for a few years now, I will never sleep on the ground again, on purpose anyways! Hammocks are far superior in every way, in hot or cold weather, it just takes a little time and effort to figure out what works for you, but you will not regret it!! I have found that it is ALWAYS easier to find a spot to hang the hammock than it is to find a place to put a tent. I tweaked the suspension on my Treklight double and can hang from trees that are anywhere from about 13' to around 25' apart. I have no aches and pains when I wake up. It makes an excellent place to chill out in the rain without being cooped up in a tent, for that matter it makes a great place to chill at anytime, anywhere. I hang mine under a camo tarp, so it practically disappears in the woods. i could go on and on about how hammocks are better than tents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh p.s., I hate the Hennessy hammocks with their weird bottom entry, but thats just a matter of opinion, some people love it.

I forgot the other thing that I really like about my hammock. In the morning you just unzip and swing your legs out and you have a comfortable seat. No muddy boots in the tent, no struggling to put on your muddy boots while you sit with your feet sticking out of the door of your tent in the pissing down rain.

Hey gang, I just joined up but have been a member over at HF for a long while now.

I started with a Hennessy Expedition and still love it. Since then I've built 11 hammocks. Yup. Eleven. (The DIY bug hit me pretty hard last winter.)

I love hammocking. I certainly won't say it's better in every way - at least not for everyone (but it sure is for me!).

I love the fact that I never have to find a flat spot for a tent. Finding trees is never an issue (I live in Maine), but finding a spot large enough for even a small tent can be a pain.

I love how the bottom of my hammock doesn't get wet in a downpour - even if I get a huge pool of water under where I'm sleeping all my stuff stays nice and dry up in the air.

I love swinging in the breeze on warm summer nights (all two or three of them we have here) and being snug and warm in my cold weather setup (the rest of the year).

I love, especially, how my back feels in the morning.

I don't like how I need extra insulation under me to stay warm, though it's not really extra since I'd be using a pad on the ground anyway and a pad works in the hammock. But a pad in the hammock isn't nearly as comfortable as an underquilt... which together with an overquilt works out to be just a tad heavier than a full sleeping bag (a good one, anyway). So I guess if you do it right, it can be lighter than a pad and bag on the ground. And it's definitely lighter than a tent.

That's a lot of rambling.

I bought a Hennessy Explorer Deluxe in excellent shape for $60 on craigslist. There's definitely deals out there.
