Has anyone used this with success? Cut a hole in one for the head to stick through and then put your feet in the other one, you also can have holes for the arms to stick out like a trash bag poncho. Has anyone done this, how does it compare to the other emergency bivy systems you can buy? The big advantage is if you don't need the bivy set up the trash bags can do a lot of other things. Dan |

My thinking is this if you need a bivy sack, two trash bags can do this. If you need door one trash bag can do this. If you need a sheet to lay down on you can cut open a trash bag and it can do this. If you need to make a solar water maker, a trash bag can do this. A lot of options. Is there any trash bags better than others, I am talking lighter weight ones, want to keep the thickness and weight down. Dan |

I recently put together an Altoids tin survival kit and included a kitchen-size garbage bag. It folded up quite small and everything else fits well. Water/food collection, shelter, ground protection, parka...all potential uses. |

The down side to using them as a bivy sack is that they will trap the moisture coming off your body so it may not be best in a cold weather situation as you could get sweaty and chilled. But overall I like them for emergency use.

will make you wet in usage. If you have to move after usage you need to keep moving as you will freeze if you stop. Better to build a good shelter if you can. With or without a fire. Dan |

I'd be interested in finding a couple. This is my first thread/reply on this forum. I've spent an hour or so on it and I've enjoyed some new ideas and different perspectives. I did my 20+ years in the Army as an MP and retired as a First Sergeant in 1998. Most people aren't of the tactical mission of the MP. Trust me I spent my time in the field! During my tour with the 25th Infantry Division (Light) I learned the meaning of "Travel light freeze at night!" I agree that trash bags aren't ideal but they are inexpensive, portable, and something that we generally have around the house. A couple of 2 to 3 mil drum liners could do a lot to make an unexpected overnight stay in the woods more bearable. Thanks, Top |
