Default Quick Emergency Shelter

With all the discussion about various shelters I thought I would share what I came up with for my Emergency/Get Home Bag.

I cut 10 feet of visqueen (sheet plastic) off a roll. When you unfold it then it is about 6-8ft wide. I put a couple of bungee cords in my bag so if I wanted to I could wrap the plastic around a tree and secure it with the bungee cord. Then just fan the plastic out and put some rocks on it to hold it in place. If the ground is wet you could fold it in towards the tree so you could sit on it. Kind of like an instant teepee.

I came up with it as a super quick plan to keep you dry and out of the wind.
You could probably pile up leaves and debris for a litle more warmth or improvise with it for winter.

Good job cowgirl. I have carried visqueen/plastic sheeting for years. I cut mine a little longer about 12 feet. Just so I can use part of it as a ground cloth.

My emergency shelter is quick as all get out. I just have to fold the back seats forward in my SUV and whammo, instant twin bed!

Or better yet, go by my parents house and "borrow" their RV....lol

Seriously, folks, keep an eye out for older RV's. Around here, anyways, you can find some really good deals on RV's that are about 20 years old, give or take a few years. I regularly see listings for under 2500 USD. They would be great in SHTF scenarios, as they are transportation, shelter and bathroom facilities all in one. Most have ample storage room, too.

Hey! I have that as a plan too if I'm staying with my truck. I have a 12x20 tarp in case I need to live out of the truck. I can close one end of the tarp inside the doors on one side of the truck and put it acorss the roof. Then tie the other end off on some trees or make some little poles and I have an outdoor porch for cooking and stuff. Also the green tarp is better camo for a white SUV.

I did that months ago when I revised my emergency bag. You must have picked up my vibe!! LOL!!!

If I'm trying to get someplace I don't want to have to spend a lot of time and energy building a shelter.

tube tents or a large poly bivvy bags make a good quick shelter where you only need one anchor point. a poncho makes a very good sit shelter to keep the weather off you in all terrains while you rest, a candle in there can also make a suitable heater provided you maintain an airflow

vehicles can be counter productive as they draw heat away through the metal shell when its cold or act like an oven when its hot.
