VT - flare guns are great for boaters because you are shooting them from a visible horizon. Their flight path is relatively short. If you add a canopy of trees in a rugged terrain they are not quite as effective. (unless you spot a rescue party/vehichle/helicopter) prior to signaling. Additionally, as was said already be careful of the fire hazard. An item you may want to consider at some point is a Rescue Laser Flare. There are different models available, with the smallest weighing in around two - three ounces. Just a thought.

VT, Here is a review of the Rescue Laser Flare. EQUIPPED TO SURVIVE (tm) - Rescue Laser Flare Review |

I've had a German made flare gun for years now. Purchased it from an ad out of Shotgun News. It is tough as nails (all steel), and uses 25mm flares which is the standard. Shoots straight as an arrow up to about 400 feet, and always burns out before hitting the ground. Also makes a dandy back up weapon .

If you're going to get a laser flare, I would get the one that emits the green light, because I've heard that at night and even during the day, the green light spectrum is easier to see, whereas the red is on the lower end of the light spectrum, thereby decreasing its visibility, or so I've heard.
