Default Signaling

I already had it in a different post but I will put it here also. A great cost effective signaling device is a good loud whistle. They don't cost that much( around $5.00), and they make a ton of noise. You don't have to wear your voice out from yelling.
I have a Storm Whistle and they claim that they are the loudest whistle in the world. I don't know about that claim, but I do know that they are loud. I can blow mine and my 3 dog's go crazy.
Like I said, they are cheap and you can carry them right in your pocket or around your neck.

Always consider the wind direction when signalling with noise. My partner and I were out on the lake once, me on skis and he on snowshoes, and I had the backpack with all the gear. I was a few hundred yards ahead of him, blissfully skiing along, and when I turned around after a while to check on him, to my surprise he was gesturing in rather unfriendly terms at me. When I turned back and got within hearing distance, he was sputtering loudly "are you deaf or what? I've been yelling and blowing the whistle like crazy, why didn't you turn around?" Turns out, the headwind we were moving into had prevented me from hearing anything at all. (And he had just wanted something out of the backpack)

Default whistles

When I go to give talks to kids, I always bring along a bunch of whistles and pass them out, cheap insurance.
(with instructions not to open them until they get home)

When you get a whistle, try to get a pealess one. The pea in whistles can freeze up on you in winter conditions.

not only does it save your voice, certain injuries will not allow you to yell without feeling alot of pain, like broken ribs. Plus it takes more energy to yell then to use a whistle.

BCB*Survival*USA*::...

When I am in the field I use this one, and I crazy glued a button compass to it that I also bought on this site, I took of the metal keychain loop and use a 6' piece of paracord as a necklace. I use the button compass for quick bearing and I know my whistle is always accessable. Plus I have one in my Altoid tin in my EDC bag. Better safe than sorry. I also made a few more whistle necklaces for the kids when we go camping. I bought a bunch of them as well as the button compasses 'cause I didn't want to pay more for shipping then the item. I always do this with cheap items.
