When I was very young my friends and I were always looking for every little thrill we could get. On a couple of occasions we walked out into the open and fired my friends compound bow straight up into the air. I remember looking into the sky and not being able to see the arrow, and then within milliseconds the arrow appeared and landed about 10 feet away from me! And it sunk 8 or 10 inches into the dirt too... stupid. Very stupid.

Here in LA it's usually a tradition on New Year's eve at the stroke of midnight to fire a gun into the air to welcome in the new year. Whether firing straight or in an arch, two tourists in New Orleans were killed in exactly this fashion from a fallen bullet. It is now a banned practice in New Orleans.

I just wouldnt want to get rescued only to get arrested for a homicide. Does it make more sense to shoot into the side of a hill or a thick tree? Ionno maybe I'm just being paranoid. Any thoughts?
If you fire a rifle at 90 degrees when it comes down it will not kill someone its terminal velocity is to slow. If the rifle was aimed at 89 or 91 degrees or anything larger or smaller it will kill someone. So you are right to say that. I feel the same way you should aim somewhere that will stop the bullet.

Default three shots

If I am lost in the deep woods, the last thing I would be concerned with is whether somebody is close enough to be hit by one of my three spent bullets. If there are enough people around for that to be a concern, and you are still lost, I reckon you have bigger problems than you let on.... and being lost probably ain't one of them.

By the way, your physics is all wrong with the 90 degree comment.

Isn't three shots based on something from the Masons?

its not completely wrong the bullet will still cause harm but if it will kill or not which i said it wouldn't I could be wrong. The bullet does fall slower then it goes up. Unless your in a vacuum then you would just die by being in a vacuum. What I mean by terminal velocity is the velocity at which a falling body moves through a medium, as air, when the force of resistance of the medium is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the force of gravity.

where i got my definition Terminal velocity Definition | Definition of Terminal velocity at Dictionary.com
