do you think you could attach a bottle rocket to CW's kite to get it up into the wind sooner?

on the kite idea; is there anything we might carry anyway that could get a trash bag to blow up lighter than air, to be like a signal balloon? what about hot air from a fire? what if I rigged my zippo, under an opening in a trash bag (bag held open w/ a flexible stick fashioned into a ring, with duct tape) to act like a hot air balloon? anyone think it might fly?

Don't think a trash bag would work, but that space blanket might. That gives me something to experiment with this weekend.

I would imagine that if you were to sew or tape a polarshield emergency blanket into a balloon type shape, you could fill it with heated air and get it to float.

I'd forgotten about this. now I'm thinking about trying it again for fun. as long as I don't claim my son is in the balloon if it floats away

Match head make a terrific propellent...just don't use the strike anywhere type otherwise you will likely blow yourself up.

We used to shoot at monkeys with liferaft co2 bottles and a pipe and reuse the discharged empties by filling them with match heads and a cloth streamer for stability...the match head propelled ones flew alot faster than co2 filled....you could barely see them in flight they were so fast.

I think it would work if you fasioned a ballon out of a space blanket, I think the biggest hangup would be being able to regulate the heat source so you can keep it at a steady altitude.

Amazing thing; my buddy at work just got back from trip to his native India. Imagine my surprise when he showed me these pictures of one of their activities. He said they used a burning rag soaked in gasoline; but I'm guessing a few TJ Balls, or maybe an elpidi tealight star of unswydd would work equally well. I'm gonna find out where to buy these ready-made balloons, thinking they can be used as a stuff sack unless needed. the ring can be made from snare wire that lots of people carry anyway. not sure if it will pull up with a light guy line like floss attached. how's that for a signal!!??
