Default Seeking Premium Fatwood

In keeping with my philosophy of trading locally, be it geographically local (my hometown, state, region, country, etc) or within the communities I frequent (such as these forums), I am putting out a call for FatWood and willing to pay a premium price to someone who can supply it.

Not just any FatWood. What I am seeking is high quality, highly resinous fatwood that can be harvested from Longleaf Pine stumps in the Southeastern United States. (since I do not live in LongLeaf Pine country I cannot be exactly sure of this).

There is quite an amount of poor quaility fatwood on the market. The best fatwood I have seen has a dark orange color and is visibly resin-impregnated as shown in the picture below.

As some of you may know, Survival Topics and FireSteel.com now offers the Bunker Plus and Armageddon Plus FireSteel systems. These are composed of a FireSteel.com FireSteel, scraper (a new and improved model showcased in the Survival Topic "New FireSteel Scrapers".), a fatwood chunk, and a two foot 550 paracord lanyard.

Rather than obtain fatwood from big box stores or large online companies, I prefer to do business with you guys, wherever possible.

The fatwood I am looking for must have a very high amount of resin, very orange in color usually. Also, it needs to be in complete blocks or sticks that can be cut or split into pieces about 1/2 x 1/2 x 4-inches square.

The offer is $3.00 a pound after culling out the unusable portions, plus shipping costs.

If you live in Fatwood country and would like to supply SurvivalTopics.com and FireSteel.com with high quality fatwood, make some money while getting some good outdoor exercise, PM or email me.

It's a beautiful afternoon after a hard frost this morning - I'm outta here for the duration of the day!

Ron

Wow, great idea Ron! I like the look of the new scraper, too. It looks the the scallop would give maximim contact with the surface of the rod and throw more sparks.

Sorry, though...no fatwood here.

Can you give some more details on what to look for?

There is a construction site not far from here that I know tore down a tone of trees...

There is lots of it around here. Normally its the heart or core of the pine only. the rest of the tree rots and the good fat wood does not rot. Even when it has been laying directly on the ground for 10, 20 years.

Working this stuff into nice uniform sticks is another story. It is very hard on saw blades and if your not careful you can burn down your shop.

hey Ron I have about 50lbs of really good fat wood, and a buddy of mine has a stump from a long leaf pine that he cut the tree down about six months ago, and he told me that I could have the stump I just gotta cut it out. I had posted some pics of the fat wood that I got, just send me an email with what prices for what weight ,and I'll see what I can do for ya

That stuff is everywhere down here. It might be tricky getting them all squared up like in the pick though, but if you have it figured out I like the idea alot. Bring a truck down and well fill er up Ron.
