Default My firesteel has arrived!

I want to thank ron for my firesteel and this great site! I have not tried it out yet and when i do i will try it on my vasilene/cotton combo.I know there are threads on here about tinder and stuff but i havent got to read them yet. I am a hiker/backpacker/camper and would like to know what works the best starting a campfire specifically in wind. Once again, thanks ron!

the vas/cotton is probably one of the best tinders to use (although i use wax soaked as it is less sticky)

another good one to try is make your own fatwood, take wood shavings or sawdust and soak in wd40, it takes a spark well and burns a goodly long time (although you would have to build a wind break to use this as it would blow away if you are not careful)

Cotton Wool Balls with Vasaline are pretty good. Also, try collecting lint from clothes drier filters. It catches a spark pretty well.

It's worth checking out some of the threads on here for more detailed info.
I'd go into more depth, but my battery is about to die !!!

texas, this is the mother of all firesteel firestarters ("TJ Balls" - name not endorsed by TJ):

Successful Fire-Starter Experiment!

Also, a wicked hardcore long term (30 minute +) firestarter (now in my winter bag in place of the road flare) is Elpids "Tea Bagger Burner" (name not endorsed by Elpid) which is basically a mini-buddy burner made using a tea light candle container.

All right Kevin, so I got to thinking...
