Hope the talk goes well tonight. BTW - if you do get all your Dorm stuff organized, it means you will have more space to buy/get/borrow more stuff. Trust me - it's a never ending process !

i hadn't read all the responses... im sure this is mentioned above and/or better ones... but for folks that have not considered the "what if" scenario, sometimes solid examples are the best way to show them. I mean detailed examples. We have Hurricane Katrina as a great recent example in an urban setting as well. Of course up in your neck of the woods - hurricanes are not as likely, but you can easily expand on the scenario to be: - riots at the university - fires - blackout (also see riots/looting) - terrorist attack - tornadoes up there? i dont think... - ...and my all time favorite... the virus that gets out that turns people into zombies (I dont suggest starting with this one... something you kinda have to warm up to... "Hey honey, what if zombies were trying to eat us... can you pass the potatoes..." By getting to the details - you have to show what are the immediate threats to you and your loved ones and/or the property/possessions you own thus showing why "bugging out" is a needed scenario Once you can establish that there may be a case to "bug out" you now have opened the door to "well how do we bug out...." - food on hand - basic survival materials - routes out of the city (several) - who to contact - safe points along the way - what if you cant get out of the city - ...and.... A FULL TANK OF GAS! I think keeping a couple gallon can on hand is the best idea... just cyle it out every now and then to keep it somewhat fresh (meaning use it in your gas tank and refill every few months).

My girlfriend tends to give me a hard time about some of the stuff I have and things I do, but she understands and accepts that this is part of who I am. I've started teaching her a few simple "neat" things here and there when we're around each other (she goes to school on the other coast) and she enjoys most of it. Try the same with your significant, a little bit at a time.

I'm thinking you just need to work at it over time. my wife is not really a prepper, but I KNOW she feels much more comfortable knowing that I am. maybe your S.O. is the same. It may be selfish of them not to prepare for themselves, but they don't see the potential need for it. just know that the first time you gotta hit the road for a disaster or other issue, S.O. will be glad you are ready and will be on board from that moment on! if you care, and you sound like you do, just pack a bag for them and yourself.
