My feeling is it is better to stock up on items that are always in demand - food, water, clothing, ammo, parts, and other supplies. These will always be valuable for personal use and for trade => in some situations far more valuable than precious metals.

IMO save your money for prep supplies, food, ammo, medical stuff, fuel, the like. What good will gold/silver be? Most likely in a TEOTWAWKI /SHTF situation where will you spend it stores will likely be closed. People will want something that fills their belly's, comfort them, protect them. I guess that in worse case scenerio you could melt it down and make bullets.

Also you have to figure that few people are set up to verify the value of your precious metals. Offer a gold bar in trade to an ordinary person - how do they determine its weight and purity? Can they trust it to be what you say it is? However in a SHTF situation the value of a gallon of olive oil is more easily understood and is immediately usable. |

Again Ron, it all depends on the extent of the social breakdown each of our SHTF scenarios assume. If things are a total shambles, and the survivors are trying to reestablish some sort of society, then that's one thing. If we are dragging along in a crippled society with some systems working and some things not working, then that is quite different. And if we are simply trying to survive from one day to the next, that's yet another thing. It'll also depend on where you are, what resources are available, and how hungry people are. Also, is it a set of temporary or long term changes you are facing? In the extreme a Snickers Bar and a liter of bottled water may be worth a pouch of gold coins. In another, an ounce of salt or a silver dime may rein supreme. All depends on which SHTF scenario you are assuming as a basis for your argument. The various degrees of severity each of us is assuming makes such arguments as this sort of meaningless. All of us are right based on our own assumptions. I'd suggest we define the scenario and then discuss the point. Otherwise its a waste of time.
