Default Post your most obscure survival facts.

Now the reason I decided to make this thread is that I have seen some pretty nifty tricks described by the members here and wondered to myself "If they had that little tidbit what else might be in their?". So please go right on ahead and put out the facts that aren't very well known or just plain aren't brought up in discussion. As for me I'm not very experienced (no experience) and thus, have none.

I don't have it anymore because I gave it to my Aunt who has two boys in the cub scouts, but it is the game called Worst Case Scenario, and you can buy it at Walmart. BTW, I also gave them a couple of 100 ft of 550 cord.

It is a simple game, where there is a curvy path to follow, and you only progress by getting the right answer to questions that are labeled on a fat stack of cards (front AND back), which should last you till TEOTWAWKI.

I HIGHLY recommend you check it out because it is the epitome of obscure survival knowledge! WOOT

Agreed, that game rocks...however if youre just looking for all around obscure knowledge, I recommend Trivial Pursuit - Celtic Warrior edition. Best edition to date.

Here is something I have been observing / trying out in various scenarios to see if it works... (not something I read / heard... so this is from me and could be wrong!)

sometimes (not the best method)... you can tell north by the direction trees are leaning.

What I do is take a sample... ~5 trees that are not in bunches of trees where they are obstructed... but more or less standing alone. If the tree is onstructed from the sun - it will grow in a direction to get the best rays of sun that is why you cant trust this unless the tress is standalone...

in the northern hemisphere - faster growing trees (pines for example) will lean slightly to the south/south east. to catch the best part of the sun.

Just a note - this is something I am still researching so dont bet your life on it... I'd be interesting if anyone else has observed/noticed this... or if im an idiot

When hubby is walking on the trails I go out later and try to get as close to him without him hearing or seeing me, a sneak attack : ). I do the Fox Walk , not to be confused with Fox Trot, a skill I'm still tryin to learn. I practice on my sqeaky wooden floors in my art studio to work on balance, then try it in the woods.

If our lab/mix is not out running I have a better chance of getting close to DH without to much noise. I'll hear hubby, he's breaking down fallen tree limbs , coughin or fartin or both, so he's easy to find : /

And who hasn't played flashlight tag in the woods, now thats fun on those real dark nights.

Another thing i'm working on is doing away with (a little at a time mind you ) sweet treats, I can now do without soft drinks, and even coffee, but I do like my coffee in the morning but can do without. That sweet tooth is going to be a bugger if times get bad and we can't get them. And its best in hard times to look a little on the lean side so you won't be noticed. I'm still working on that to : (. Getting back to 119lbs is going to take some doing.

Also the thoughts of home intrusion, we are in the country but that doesn't make you safe. So I have different things to use around the house if I should be trapped in any one room. The bathroom would be the worst and taking a bath : (. That loose towel rack will come in handy, I can whip that off and beat the intruder unless I scare him to death first, nothing like beating a dead intruder. Baseball bats in other rooms, iron skittles in kitchen and rollin pins, learnin knife throwing will come in handy to. Toss pepper in eyes and turnips if need be.

In my garden i will have my hoe to wack with, unless they have a gun, then I will run in zig zags, might get capped in the buttocks but then lay down as tho dead. Unless they take after my maters then there will be a fight on.

I think your observation is generally correct, Mac; but, this kind of north or south-seeking technique can be made a bit confusing if the area is dominated by a strong prevailing wind. Consistent winds cause tree deformation that some might confuse with sun-reaching growth. This is seen in the Griggs Putnam index of tree deformation:

NO, you're absolutely NOT an idiot. I just wanted to point out that folks may need to use good judgement and discernment when trying to draw conclusion from complex, natural processes. Wind and sun BOTH effect how a tree leans.

For whatever the heck that's worth...

This is a tip I used years ago. I had a penlight in my pack, and a glob of silly putty, I needed to do something, it was dark, so I stuck the putty to a tree, and stuck my penlight in it and it held. Who'd a thunk it?

I heard that edition blows. Supposedly, the creator is really just a robot programmed to join every survival forum in known cyber existence only to spew countless facts and information wherever they may apply or relate. I guess it is harmless but still, it creeps me out! I heard the avatar that represents this program is an Irish tap dancing human who wears a green skin tight batman jump suit. CREEPY!
